Dance Program?

Hi...I was wondering if anyone had any information on the dance program?
Can you major or minor?
What are the classes like?
Are their performance opportunities?
Do you need to audition?
Any information is helpful!

I know that you can major in dance, but you cannot minor.
If you want to dance non-academically, the athletic facilities like Palladium offer informal dance classes in a bunch of genres/styles.

Auditions are required for admission to the dance program. They are scheduled after the applications are processed. According to a friend who just auditioned, there is an audition class. Some cuts were made during her class, then most students were released while a few were held to perform a short solo and interview with faculty.

There are 2 options for dance majors – a 4-year program or a 3-year/2-summer program. Nearly all students choose the 3-year program because of the opportunity to work with professional companies during the summer term.

If you are looking for information on schools with dance programs, I recommend the Ballet Talk for Dancers site. They have a lot of information from current students/alumni/parents at many schools. The NYU information is listed in the Tisch thread.

Also, if you’re interested in dancing, but not as a major, there are a couple really good studios in New York (duh!). Check out Steps on Broadway and Broadway Dance Center, I’ve heard good things about both of those. The classes do cost money, but they’re pretty reasonable.

Like wisdomsomehow said, if you want to go to NYU but not major in dance, Broadway Dance Center and Steps are really good places to take class at (I go to both weekly). Although I haven’t been to them, I know there are other various studios around the city for classes as well (that are often cheaper, just not as prestigious), so even if you’re not a dance major, it’s still really easy to continue dancing at NYU. I go to the Gallatin school at NYU, and I know people here who are pursuing dance as part of their concentrations, which is another option if you want to study dance and combine it with other interests. Outside of the dance program at Tisch, I’ve seen dance classes listed in the Steinhardt school (although those seem to be mostly beginner level classes) and Gallatin (mostly more modern-type classes, although I’m taking a class here in World Dance this semester), so although there aren’t a ton of options, it is possible to take dance classes at NYU for credit even if you’re not in the dance program. Also, Gallatin has a Dancers-Choreographers Alliance club (which is open to students from all schools at NYU) that you can get involved with as well.
