Heyyy! I'll be an incoming freshman at CMU this fall and I was wondering if there is any way I could continue dance at CMU (I've been dancing/taking classes practically my whole life). There seems to be no dance department, and that just bums me out so much! I saw that the Drama/Musical Theater majors have to take some dance classes but it seems only reserved for those majors (btw, I'm going to be a Psych/Bio major at H&SS). Is there any possible way I could still dance at CMU? Thanksss you!

There is a group for nonmajors called Dancer’s Symposium at CMU. They put on two shows per year, and it is all student choreographed/directed. Choreographers scale their dances according to difficulty and then pick students to fill spots in their dances - so if you have dancing experience you’ll probably get into a harder dance easily. It’s a lot of fun to watch and is really popular on campus.

Also, there’s a variety of clubs – there’s a Ballroom Dance, African Dance and Modern Jazz group.

Yup, to echo what completelykate said, DS is pretty much the best opportunity. It’s really fun to do - there are auditions at the beginning of teach semester where the choreographers show you small excerpts from their pieces, and then you audition for the ones you’re interested in. You can be in up to three pieces. There’s a lot of hip-hop pieces, plus some jazz/modern and a little ballroom, which was a little less than ideal for me, since I am a super classically trained ballet dancer. However, I still had a ton of fun doing DS - definitely audition when you get here. Auditions should be the Saturday after the 1st or 2nd week of classes.

Wow, that sounds great! I’m also heavily trained in ballet, but I do a lot of modern dance. I think I’ll definitely audition for Dancer’s Symposium. Thank you guys, it was all really helpful!
