Hi...I was wondering if anyone had any information on the dance program?
Can you major or minor?
What are the classes like?
Are their performance opportunities?
Do you need to audition?
Any information is helpful!

This will tell you everything you need to know about the major and the minor, as well as whatâs going on in the dance department. The minor is relatively easy to fulfill, so a lot of Duke dancers choose to do this. The dance major was just approved 1 or 2 years ago, so it is relatively new. Both are going to require a combination of technique classes and regular classroom classes (for example, I took Postmodern Dance and Functional Anatomy for Dancers), as well as âtech hoursâ which includes things like handing out programs at events, etc etc.

Repertory is where youâre going to find your performance opportunities, and you do have to audition for these. Ballet Rep, Modern Rep, and I believe African Dance Tech will all hold auditions at the beginning of each semester, and tend to rehearse in the evening hours. Students enrolled in repertory classes perform in November Dances (at the end of the fall semester) and Choreolab (at the end of the Spring semester). At these semester-end performances in the past the past, Julie and Tyler Walters have both choreographed their own ballet pieces, and thereâs always a Modern piece (usually more than one) and an African piece that students perform in. In addition, a few students are usually given the opportunity to do their own pieces, usually for their senior thesis (if theyâre a major/minor) or because they received grant money, so if this is something youâd want to do, you certainly have a great opportunity to get your work out there. Students choreographing their own pieces cast them as well, so thatâs another opportunity to be able to perform without being a part of a repertory group. Finally, Duke brings in a lot of outside choreographers who will occasionally set pieces on selected groups of students. Last spring, Vincent Mantsoe set a piece on a small, audition-only group of African Dance students, while Katie Glasner (whoâs worked extensively with Twyla Tharp) set âEight Jelly Rollsâ on another group of students, and both were performed at Choreolab.

In addition, if the repertory groups/studio classes arenât your style, there are various dance groups across campus that will perform throughout each semester. DefMo (Defining Movement) is audition-only and they perform pretty much any style of dance throughout the year (definitely a campus favorite!). Sabrosura (another favorite) is our latin dance group (audition-only), Dance Black I believe is still around (the one time Iâve seen them they did a really cool hip hop piece), and Dance Slam (which does not hold auditions) focuses on jazz/lyrical-esque pieces. These groups have their own showcases at various times throughout the year, and will usually invite all the other dance groups to perform a piece at their showcases. The benefit of a dance club is if you want to choreograph youâre probably going to have the chance to at some point.

This is the spring schedule, so you can see whatâs offered. The technique classes are generally the same each semester, while classroom classes will change. Iâve only ever taken ballet. If this is what youâre interested, let me know and Iâd be happy to go into more detail about the teachers/individual classes.
