I am a prospective transfer and have been dancing all of my life.

I am curious about the W&M Dance Team...what sort of dance do they do? How are they viewed by other students? etc.

Here’s a link to the Tribal Dancer’s website ([William and Mary’s Tribal Dancers](http://wmpeople.wm.edu/site/page/tribaldancers/home)). They tend to perform at sporting events and the like.

We also have other dance teams on campus such as Bhangra (Indian Classical Dance), Ballroom Dance, and other dance troups such as Rhythm and Taps, Pointe Blank and Orchesis.

If you go to YouTube and search for “William and Mary tribal dancers” you’ll find clips of their performances at games.

W &M offers a surprising variety of dance groups, from the dance team to English folk dancing to ethnic/religious and contemporary dance. I just returned from the annual Evening of Dance concert, which is choreographed and performed by members of Orchesis, the modern dance troupe affiliated with W&M’s department of Theater, Speech, and Dance. Considering that the College only offers dance as a minor, the quality of dancing is high (several troupe members were in well-known pre-professional ballet programs before college); and the choreography is challenging and well-grounded in dance theory instruction. The same company performs works by faculty and professional choreographers in another concert each fall. This January, my d and 5 other dancers performed at a national dance conference in Los Angeles - her professor/choreographer had funded their participation through writing grants.

So - you should be able to find many opportunities to dance! If you want a high-level ballet class, there’s a well-respected local studio that has a pre-professional program. Classes offered at the College only go to the intermediate level for ballet and jazz, though there are 4 levels of modern.

If you’re a prospective student you can consider making a fine art submission to our dance faculty as part of your application. Just as we rely on our coaches to tell us who the outstanding athletes are we rely on our fine arts faculty to tell us who the talented artists are in our pool.

Information about the fine arts submission is found on the W&M Supplement to the Common App so if you’ll be applying for Fall 2012 it’s something you can consider
