What is Dartmouth known for?

You might want to check out Fiske guides; they list each school’s strongest programs.

Honestly, that’s a good question. All I can think of is the fact that it is an Ivy. And that the name is cool.

^haha! I know! It does have a cool name lol.

they invented beer pong over there

No, honestly, I would say it is an ivy league college especially focussing on undergraduate teaching and distinguished by lots of campus traditions.
I think I remember something about a pretty good international relations program but I don’t think they are especially well known for a certain subject area.

Econ. They feed like crazy into Wall Street–or, at least they did before the whole recession thaaaang–and it’s taught excellently; history and English are also standouts.

Dartmouth has great programs in every area. I have friends that were Econ. majors that went to Wall Street; I have friends that were Art majors and went on to do better than the Econ. majors. Dartmouth is mostly known for the totally unbelievable atmosphere at the school. Dartmouth has one of the best alumni giving rates in the world - which means that their alums. love the school. A Dartmouth grad. will rant and rave about their alma mater all day; about the DOC trips, the parties, the D plan (look this one up, it’s the best part), the clubs and the entertainment.

Really, Dartmouth is a small school at heart - that’s why they call themselves a college. It’s also an Ivy, though I hope that isn’t why you would choose a school. If you go to Dartmouth you are going to get a much more personal experience than if you went to the other Ivies. It is also for someone who loves activity and the outdoors (it is almost in the middle of nowhere). I suggest that you don’t look at Fiske guides, because they are going to show only numbers and other BS. Don’t get hung up on Mid-Range SAT scores compared to Harvard or whatever people worry about. Talk to a grad (how I got interested), or look on websites that give reviews from students. Better yet, take a visit. They have a great student forum that happens after tours which is very unique and allows visitors to get a great feel for the school.

thanks! that was were thorough and informative!

It has a joie de vivre that no other school seems to have. Both DH and DS2 went to Dartmouth – DH, obviously, many years ago. It changed his life. He is very very grateful for all that Dartmouth did for him and he is a consistent alumni giver. DS just graduated and really enjoyed his years there.

The alumni network is amazing. 40 years later, DH runs into people who went to Dartmouth who he has never met before, and the bond between these two former strangers is amazing.

Can anyone point me to a site that ranks Dartmouth in Econ? I’ve been hearing great things about Dartmouth’s program but I can’t find where it’s ranked. Thanks!

You really don’t need rankings, man.
