Panera Bread in West Lebanon, Yamas in Hanover.

Thanks Magnum! Trip Advisor reviews rate Yamas as being very good. I will stop in before I turn in.

I have a travel question for all experienced GREEN parents. I am in the process of booking travel for my D’17’ for winter break and being that she will have the typical freshmen load could someone advise on the most sensible day for travel. Final exams end/Final exam period ends confuses me a bit. D needs to ride the shuttle to Boston and the window for travel is so close to Thanksgiving, so I’m hoping to get this done now before all flights fully book. Below is the class calendar. Thanks

Fall Term 2013
September 16, Monday – Fall term classes begin
November 19, Tuesday – Fall term classes end; start of Pre-Examination Break
November 22, Friday – Final examination period begins
November 26, Tuesday – Scheduled final examinations end
November 27, Wednesday – Final examination period ends

Winter Term 2014
January 6, Monday – Winter term classes begin

She could have an exam as late as Tuesday 11/26. I would wait
until she’s sure about her classes. At that point, she should know which classes will have exams at a set time (as opposed to papers or take-home exam), and can possibly approach professor(s) to ask about possibility of taking exam early (to permit travel on Monday or Tuesday, say) if the class ends up scheduled for a Monday or Tuesday exam. I have no idea when the exam schedule is set, but I’m pretty sure it’s not until much later in the term. I don’t think D ever had more than one or two “you must be physically present” exams, and it was always possible to take them early, but that might have reflected the mindset of her department. YMMV.

Wish I could offer more concrete advice, but we never really faced this issue since last year was the first time that the fall term ended before Thanksgiving and she had no exams (just papers and thesis). Before then, we never bothered trying to get her home to California for Thanksgiving (three or four days at home was not really worth 10+ hours of travel time each way) and it was easy to find flights when the term ended in early December.

Magnum thanks for the Yamas tip. Food was very good and brought back plenty to the hotel room and I will be back. Parking is so hard to find in this tiny town and the police seem hard up always writing tickets for expired meters. Couldn’t understand why D Hinman box was closed on a Saturday at 3pm. Oh well have to wait till Monday I guess.
D seems to like her new independence now. She seems to not want to be around me as much. As long as her ATM card continues to work I will just accept her behavior to be normal. :)

Congrats on a sucessful launch. It only gets better for the next 4 years. Check out all the Dartmouth sites and the Flickr page to catch a glimpse of her with her new found friends.

Hubby and I arrived last Friday from L.A., just in time to deliver 3 huge suitcases to our son before he headed off to meet the baseball team captain. We have enjoyed our time both with our son and on our own exploring the surrounding areas. NH is beautiful!

I have a few questions, if anyone can offer advice. :)

Son is interested in putting a mini fridge under his bed. He has a single bed that is raised up to 26", but I’m not sure if this is a safe idea.

Is there any place to rent a car in Hanover or nearby?

Tomorrow is packed with Orientation activities and the information indicates that we say goodbye to our student at the end of the day. I get that as we did the same with our girls, but I am wondering if we should still hang around nearby for the occasional dinner or truly go on our way and sight see before flying home on Saturday?

Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom.

While the college tells you to leave your son, its really up to you and your son. I think the Inauguration of President Hanlon and Convocation is this coming Friday and If I were in town I would attend that. If you have a chance to explore the area, by all means do so. Vermont, Maine and NH are a nice break in scenery from Southern Cal.

We dropped off daughter last week for DOC trip and then drove/flew back home. In talking to her now, it seems like a lot of parents stayed for a week to wait for parental events this week. She said she is one of the few without a parent. Note to '18s, you may want to stay if you can.

She is having a ton of fun and meeting a lot of people so I don’t feel too guilty. Will probably pick a weekend and go visit in the Fall.

Ah, I remember back in my Dartmouth days, the advice that went around in the form of a comic in The Dartmouth (from Mindy of the Mindy Project, no less) was to show up with little more than a suitcase, zero or few books, and a voluminous pack of socks. The idea was to fill up the dorm room with things after the first term, with another suitcase from home, and to leave a lot of room to grow and acquire stuff. And as for books, a lot of the courses assigned a veritable avalanche. I remember I got to read the manuscripts my professors were working on at the time and be a part of shaping their direction. Okay, now nostalgia is lacerating my heart! :)
