What to Bring/Buy

I was accepted ED and am extremely excited to be a 17! I was wondering if any current students or parents could talk about what kind of winter gear is necessary. Since a lot of jackets are going on sale now, I wanted to strike while the prices are relatively low. Do students usually wear those jackets that are all the way to their ankles? Are the puffy coats to the waist worn more often?

Also, what do girls typically wear to frats? Jeans? Dresses? Heals?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Northface is huge. I had the waist length, though lots of people do have the knee length puffy jacket. I also had a fleece (yes, in the ubiquitous black). You’ll also see a lot of Barbour.

The key is to not take your actual jacket to frats. I had a bright teal ski jacket (still stolen), a pink and brown plaid peacoat, and a couple other coats I didn’t care about as frat jackets. Standard basement wear is jeans, frat flats, and a cute top. You will see the black bodycon skirts when its above 40 degrees. Your frat flats may also be frat uggs or just rainboots, as weather changes. I had a very different set of shoes I wore in real life and shoes I wore after 8 PM. Dresses will show up in the spring, but winter is too cold not to wear pants.

The one key purchase I must stress is RAIN BOOTS. 1) it rains. 2) Sludge post snow 3) mud season. Everyone has them but I do really like the hunter rainboots because they’re so tall they protect your pants.

Awesome, thanks!!

Should we stock up on coats/rainboots and bring them, or is there a big enough selection in the towns around Dartmouth? All th coats and boots would be bulky on the plane =(

You won’t need them for the first few months when the heat will be your main concern. (CVS sells fans. You will want one.) Leave most at home and have them shipped after you get settled.

I’d bring a medium weight coat when you come (it can get pretty cold at night pretty early), but not your big puffy winter jacket.
