Preparing for Journey

Today, I want to book flight ticket to come to Hanover in early September (via Boston Logan International Airport). My baggage shall not exceed 30 Kilograms and I will have to bring necessary supplements.

I plan to put warm clothes, winter shoes, necessary personal items and of course my fishing gear to the baggage.

Also, I decide to live on campus. Therefore, I would like to know that which items are available in dormitories/residential rooms and which items should I bring.

Can I find a small refrigerator in Hanover's stores (Walmart, ...)?

Also, I am aware of the rule that says which items are prohibited from the residence halls:
<a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eorl/housing/firstyear/arriving.html">http://www.dartmouth.edu/~orl/housing/firstyear/arriving.html</a></p>

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

@JimmyatParadise …are you an international student? I am an international student and I have these luggage restrictions as well. Hence, I plan to buy winter clothes and all other bulky items in the US. If you have any relatives there, you could consider reaching a few days early and shopping for your necessities.

Also, are you planning to take part in the First year trips offered by the DOC? if so, you should probably no book your flight tickets just yet since the trip dates are not out yet.

Hello Conscience13.

Yes, I am an international student. Can you tell me about the First year trips offered by the DOC? (Anyway, I will have to to obtain the US visa)

Honestly, sports and clothes in the US (special winter clothes/shows) are not cheep. Also, If you’re one of the winter sports fan I suggest you to bring your Ski Equipment.

^ Check it out…
And yeah, different trips start and end on different dates ad these dates have not been published yet.
I heard somewhere that Dartmouth gives Trip allocations based on the student’s relative distance from Dartmouth. For eg., since we are international students, our trip dates might be closest to 9th Sept. (Beginning of Orientation), since it is not possible for us to go back to our homes after the trip.

BTW, Winter clothing might come cheaper during August-September. If you do have space to take winter clothing, then go ahead. Personally, I doubt I will have any free space after loading all other necessities. Hence, I guess I will do my shopping once I get there.

Yes. You are very likely [almost certain] to get trip dates toward the end – and will be able to move into your room early even if your trip ends before the dorms open for other students. Consider shipping cold weather things, since you’re not likely to need them for a while. Save your airplane luggage allowance for what is critical. You can get anything you need at the WalMart/etc. in West Lebanon, but you’d have to learn to negotiate the free shuttle system (About – Advance Transit). I’m not sure I’d personally want to try to bring a mini fridge back on it, and a lot of things that everyone needs can get sold out. There is a sale of used appliances on campus (Collis?) at the beginning of the year. Get there early and join together with other residents of your dorm to help each other carry stuff home. Give serious consideration to amazon.com. The mail room can get a little overwhelmed at the start of the year but it’s still a good option – and they may still offer trial periods with free shipping. The one thing you may want from the very beginning is a window fan – especially if you’re in the Choates. CVS [drug store on South Main] is as good a place as any. The hardware store may carry them as well.

Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions.

PM me any time if you have additional specific questions.

@Jimmy–Here is a helpful guide re: what to bring (you may have seen this already):
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~shmen/whattobring.html</a></p>

Re: your comment about ski equipment, my S (also Class of 2018) attended a local reception for admitted Dartmouth students on Sunday and had a good discussion with a fairly recent alum who mentioned that renting ski equipment from the Dartmouth ski area for the season is not expensive (relative to renting elsewhere); also buying reasonably priced used equipment is possible. These might be good alternatives to bringing equipment with you on the plane.

PS Hearing what recent alums and parents of current students had to say at the reception–and meeting other accepted kids–only confirmed for us that Dartmouth was the right choice for S.

another thing: there is a special orientation for international students that begins 1 week before the actual, common orientation. So, another possibility is that international students are allotted the earliest trip dates (trips that begin in the last week of August itself) since international orientation starts sometime around 2nd-3rd Sept. The actual dates for this orientation are not out yet but judging from last year’s schedule, looks like 2nd Sept is a likely date since the actual orientation begins on the 9th.

Really appreciated for your nice comments. The link that you mentioned is PERFECT as many people put useful comments there!

@Conscience13
Thank you for the information. I think 9th September would be OK.

BTW, I will try to arrive early September.

Again, special thanks to @maisie2, @AboutTheSame, @Conscience13 and other positive members.

Welcome to the Dartmouth family. We also live far away and learned a lot from the parents thread and the various suggestions posted there. The recycle sale starts after the last trips and before classes start. Please note, get there early for the best selections of lamps, refrigerators, and other dorm amenities. Make as many friends as you can your first year because from sophomore year on, everyone gets really busy and with the D plan, many will be off campus at different times. 4 years goes by quickly so enjoy every day.

Jimmy, I can’t recall: where are you coming from? Have you ever actually visited D, or experienced real winter weather with snow on any continent? In many southern climes, it really is not possible to buy good cold-weather gear. It would be a shame to waste money of things that you may find inadequate.

I strongly agree that you can buy a used minifridge and things like hangers for a pittance at the Collis sale.

@Consolation and @Magnum PI
Thank you so much for your helpful suggestions.

PS: do not miss Trips, because it seems trippee friends become friends for life.
