Hi everyone. I'm considering a civil/environmental engineering major, and I've been looking around the Dartmouth boards.

I'm aware that Dartmouth doesn't offer specialized engineering degrees. This is a concern for me, because there's a decent chance that I'll want to look for a job out of college. I believe there's an option to continue for a fifth year to receive a more specialized degree. However, I'm very low income, so I think money would be a problem.

Dartmouth grads seem to get great job placement, but mostly in business and financial areas. What's the outlook for Dartmouth engineering grads? Should I apply to Dartmouth? (I'm trying to narrow down my list of schools). Thanks for any advice.

A four-year engineering degree from Dartmouth is normally an AB degree, which lacks professional (ABET) accreditation. This is not the ideal degree if you are seeking engineering employment. It would be a particular handicap in civil or environmental engineering, because these are fields where licensure is important; state licensing boards typically prefer or require ABET degrees.

Dartmouth has a five-year program leading to an ABET-accredited professional engineering BE degree (it may be possible to complete the BE more quickly, but it would likely be difficult). A Dartmouth BE degree is fully licensable and employable. However, I don’t think Dartmouth offers much in terms of traditional civil engineering. They have an environmental engineering track, but not civil.

I’m sure that Dartmouth engineering BE grads do fine in the engineering job market. However, Dartmouth may not be ideal if you want a professional engineering degree in the shortest possible time, or if you want to explore the many diverse options in the civil engineering field.

Thanks for the response.

How does Dartmouth deal with financial aid for the fifth year?

You should probably email the financial aid office to inquire about that.

Yes, Dartmouth does provide full financial aid for the 5th Eng. year.
