Hey everyone...I was just wondernig if anyone could give me their insight on what its like to be a grad student at dartmouth, either from ur experience as a grad student or from what u see of grad students that you know. For undergrad i'm at columbia....i'm graduating this year and got accepted into dartmouth's MPH (master's of public health) program....the reason i would go there is because it is a one year program whereas it is two years everywhere else i applied.

My main concern about dartmouth however is:
its in the middle of nowhere, i was born, raised, and went to college in nyc....i think i might go crazy at dartmouth cause its so quiet.

Also, i was wondering, how cheap is hanover compared to nyc and whats the social scene like?

i'll prob have more questions later but i hope to get some answers to these....thanks!

Socially I think Dartmouth is tough for grad school outside of the professional schools (tuck and the med school). Its incredibly undergrad focused, which is great for undergrads (more parties and activities than you can handle). At the grad level, its a much quieter scene with less people.

If you are really interested in public health, you should look elsewhere. Public health degrees from public health colleges just make more sense. If it the MPH is a one-year gap year so you can apply to med school, then it would be fine.

Actually, Dartmouth's MPH is quite good, especially for outcomes research. Much of the pioneering work in clinical outcomes diagnostics was done at Dartmouth.

While there is a community of grad students at Dartmouth, there is a certainly a lot more camraderie within Tuck, Thayer and the Med School than other studies. I think there are ~ 1,000 total grad students at Dartmouth with Tuck and Med School around 50-60% of this amount. Many NYC transplants love the Hanover area, so that's all personal reaction. I can't comment at all on the quality of the specific program versus others.
