To the brand-new, already attending, and graduated students of Dartmouth--what is there to do there? Is there a place to see movies? A place to rent movies? A good sandwich place? A good pharmacy? Best party frat? Good discussion clubs?

Any input of what things you do during your weekends (besides study) will help me out!

Dartmouth is incredibly active on the weekends.

OFF CAMPUS

There are multiple off campus scenes (the vermont alterno scene, off campus house parties, apartment parties, dorm parties)

FRATS

A - The frat "party" scene which is univerally welcoming (check out the frat thread). The whole campus is invited to every party, and tons of people go.

B- The frats that arent having parties but have plenty of people running around, also always an open door policy.

NON ALCOHOLIC

There always seems to be non alcoholic programming. People who like to watch movies go to the Nugget, there is usually acapella or something like that going on.

The outdoor scene (canoeing, pancake paddles, etc). In the summer its swimming at first snow in the Connecticut, in the winter its skiing.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Every term has a big weekend. Also, you'll have formals to go to, concerts, and other special events.

You'll never be bored, its pretty much like a festive feeling every weekend and there are more parties then you'll know what to do with. Dartmouth is incredibly laid back and fun, the type of place where 10 seconds after you leave a party your friend will throw a snowball at you. Dartmouth College is awesome.

when i was choosing colleges to apply to, i was interested in coffee shops, movie theaters, etc. and hanover has all of that, but now that i am actually here, i rarely even go to those places. seriously, everyone stays on campus because there's so much to do here. i am a freshman and have spent every weekend partying on campus and seeing shows at the Hop and going to all the random events like a Dog Day Players show or a cluster dating game.

well, Homecoming is this weekend and it would be safe to say that a good time will be had by all (who are there) :)

Seriously, as others have stated, I really do not think that you will be at a loss for things to do becuase you can always find something happening on campus. as far as sandwich shops, they just opened a quiznoes(?), there is a CVS in town a couple of nice resturants, and yes, you can rent movies

Dog Day Players are an improv comedy group on campus. Rachel Dratch of SNL fame was supposedly a member during here time at Dartmouth. They are pretty funny. Cluster dating game (Norwegian, I'll assume you're refering to the Choates..) was organized by the UGAs in our dorm cluster (group of 4 dorms next to each other) and was a version of the classic Dating Game...just a random fun thing to do on Friday before possibly going out...The UGAs always try to do one thing per weekend as an 'alternative' to the frats. However, they are held so early (so the UGAs have time to go to the frats after) that it doesn't really work, but a nice idea....

There certainly is a film-dork scene. The Hop shows perhaps two or three films each week -- tonight, I'm heading off to see "Saving Face," and the director, Amy Wu, is appearing at Casque & Gauntlet after the first scene.

I've been spending a lot of my weekends (at least one of the days) on dayhikes with the DOC. You'd be amazed how many opportunities they provide to get outside -- since coming (and this doesn't include my freshman DOC trip), I've hiked Mount Cardigan, Camel's Hump, and Mount Gile, and I'm heading up to the Tripyramids this weekend. It's a great way to bond with a group of 5 or 6 kids you've never met and spend a day with them.

Yeah, film scene here is actually very vibrant, far more so than you would think. At the beginning of the term they showed 6 films from the Telluride Film Festival. Many famous movies, yet slightly in the indie vein, have had one of their first public viewings at Dartmouth.
