which is a better college? which offers more aid to international students?

Dartmouth and Duke are at virtually the same level academically. Outside of academic prowess, however, I believe that Dartmouth will be the better choice simply because of its Ivy League association. When you’re looking for a job and you drop an Ivy name, people are impressed to say the least. However, this is not to say that Duke’s reputation will not get you places, because it certainly will. When you get to this level of education, though, the average competence of a student from a #9 ranked school versus that of a #10 ranked school is virtually the same. For this reason, you’re going to have to assess what it is you want out of your school and then choose which one out of your top choices will accommodate your desires. Although I’m not a student, I’ve heard that one of Dartmouth’s most helpful perks is its ability to connect you with some very influential people out of college through its extensive alumni connections to help get you started on the right track. Just one of the many things that will help you compare and contrast these schools (because rankings and average scores won’t paint the full picture). Good luck!

Dartmouth is one of six US universities that offers need-blind and full-need admissions to all applicants, including international citizens. Duke only offers need-blind admissions to students who are American citizens. As stated on Duke’s website: “Because financial resources for these students are limited, each year Duke expects to enroll 20-25 first-year foreign citizens who receive need-based financial aid.”

At Dartmouth, International admissions can be extremely difficult. For the class of 2014, 3662 international students applied and 90 matriculated. If the yield was 50% that would mean 180 were admitted. This computes to an admissions rate of less than 5% compared to an overall admissions rate for the class of 2014 of 12%.
