this is sorta random, but dartmouth is the ivy league school that people dont really know about-am i right about this?

Dude don’t expect sweet replies from other members because I really think making a thread out of this question was unnecessary.

Which people? People I know have always known about Dartmouth. (And Williams, and Amherst, Cal Tech, MIT, and so forth) Yeah, there are plenty of people out there who have heard only of Notre Dame, Harvard, their state university, and a bunch of football or basketball schools.

Are those people whose opinions matter to you?

BTW, thirty years ago people used to joke that Penn was barely an Ivy league school.

yea, this was unnecessary-it was just a question though-I wasnt trying to be offensive.

I’ve really never run into this. Where are you (OP) from?

I have run into it… but with all Ivies besides HYP (and, even on that list… people really only 100% know H… Y and P have both had people in my town that didnt know it was Ivy League)… And the occasional mention of Brown. But, then again, I live in a small Canadian city that usually only sends kids to Canadian universities.

Any Ivy besides H and Y (yes even Princeton) will sometimes get the “that’s really in the ivy league” question.

Here in Asia, Stanford shows up in the “Ivy League” more than half the Ivies, including my own

^^

ilovebagels is right, for some reason, people always think of Stanford as an Ivy in Asia.

Maybe because it’s as highly regarded as Harvard. And since people consider the only “good” schools to be Ivies, Stanford HAS to be an Ivy.

Weird.

The reason you go to Dartmouth is so that you dont have to deal with the people who don’t know that it is an ivy.

I dont think Dartmouth has it as bad as Penn. I mean come on the University of Pennsylvania. It sounds like a state school. So naturaly, when you tell lay people you are going there they assume your attending Penn State or something. Dartmouth at least sounds elite.

I gotta say tho I am surprised that Brown and Cornell are as widely known as they are. Honestly, as a frosh/sophomore in HS who hadnt done any research on college at all, I had heard of HYP, Brown, and Cornell and knew all those schools were “Ivy.” I never had heard of Dartmouth or Penn.

@Rtgrove123 You knew about Cornell and not Dartmouth?
That’s crazy…

You know what? You’re being an idiot OP. I’m sorry. But its just a CC thing that puts down the Ivies and puts HYPSM on a pedestal. Don’t be so weak as to fall into whatever crap they say about Brown, Caltech, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, UChicago, and UPenn.

Because these schools are awesome and in my whole opinion, for undergrad only, I really believe these universities are equal to HYPSM.
So what if they don’t have as much prestige as HYPSM? They still make people wow. And its not the end of the world to go to these schools
There’s still grad school. I know plenty of people who go from here to HYPSM. And even if they don’t? They’re still very successful.

/thread

Dartmouth is easily one of the best undergraduate schools and feeder schools to HYPSM for graduate school.

Most small and prestigious schools (Dartmouth, Brown, Caltech) tend to have higher acceptances to top medical, law, business, and other grad. school. So **** whoever says that not going to HYPSM makes you worthless.

BTW^ richest person i’ve ever known personally went to Brown… He has a networth of around 50-100 million.

Colleges don’t define your income. Your major does.

^^ Definitely not that either…

It’s actually a fair question. On the west coast, few have ever heard of Dartmouth, but that goes for every NE LAC as well. Penn is known as the school with the great football team coached by JoePa (Wharton is its own school, no?). Outside of HYP, Cornell is probably the best known Ivy on the left coast…likely due to its strong sciences (and larger alumni presence).

ummm … joe paterno coaches penn state… not penn …

across the country, Dartmouth is known by those who are hiring in most industries - especially finance, sci, and tech.

also, Columbia is probably known just as well across the entire country … since … you know . … our President went there.

Yeah but honestly he never talks about it (didn’t apparently like it that much). Harvard gets all the press.

Ever notice how in the papers a Dartmouth or Columbia or Penn or Brown degree will get the “Ivy League-educated” label stuck somewhere in the news article, whereas only Harvard will get you “Harvard-educated”…le sigh
