I’m a HS senior who’s planning on applying to Dartmouth RD - it’s one of my top choices for undergrad. I’m interested in business, finance, and consulting after I graduate and I know Dartmouth has a fantastic alumni network with very successful graduates.
That being said, what are some common paths Dartmouth students pursue (for undergrad) to work in areas like finance/consulting? I’m interested in both Econ and QSS, currently, but does anyone else have any other inputs/advice/possible ideas for me? Thanks!
You probably know that ~47% of the students who enter the workforce after Dartmouth go into finance or consulting. I would say the most “common path” used to be via an economics or government major, but increasingly mathematics and CS as well. It’s very difficult to make suggestions because you need to do what’s best for your particular skill set and interests. At Dartmouth, you can also double, modify, and add a minor as well, so there are lots of different paths you can take. Best of luck to you.
Econ is huge at Dartmouth (it is the most popular major). But you don’t have to be an econ major to work in finance or consulting. I personally know government and math majors who have gotten some impressive internships. QSS is definitely another major that would lend itself to finance or consulting.
There are also clubs at Dartmouth that have access to a more specific alumni network. Big companies such as Goldman I think even recruit directly from these clubs. But of course these clubs are competitive to get into.
Also there are GPA cutoffs for interviews for high profile internships. If you do make it to an interview, they will probably ask you about extracurricular experience you have at Dartmouth, which is why being involved in finance or consulting clubs can be so helpful
