Fabulous to have this choice, but it's a tough one. Any thoughts?

Two great schools: congratulations. There are obviously a lot of similarities. I would pick D on size and resources alone, personally.

Williams is an awfully small campus but has focus on undergraduate studies… Dartmouth with good alumni connections. talk to some students of both colleges about things they like and dislike about their respective colleges.

got in dartmouth and amherst… similar dilemma here…

personally im pretty torn too leaning more towards dartmouth actually because of the social atmosphere and recruiting but only 55%/45% split between the 2 schools

Might want to be more specific. What are you looking for? Most people in your situation would pick Dartmouth, but Williams is fantastic in its own right. Just depends on what you want.

There is a lot of overlap between Dartmouth, Williams and Amherst. My daughter had all three schools to chose from also. It can be hard because they are all are amazing schools and will give you a great education if it your desire to obtain one. It was funny because she when she was doing visits she ran into a lot of other students who were making the same choice.

Fast forward: it becomes interesting how small the world really is. After graduation, her best friend from Dartmouth ended up with another of her friends she met at Williams admitted student days and had chosen Williams. Now in grad school, her roommate is a student she met at admitted student days at Amherst and had chosen Amherst while another good friends had chosen Williams. At the end of the day, they can all land you in the same place!

There is almost a 50/50 split between student choosing Dartmouth over Williams and Dartmouth over Amherst. For her, she said she felt the difference between 2000 and 4000 students, she found her people at Dimensions and they all committed to coming to Dartmouth together. I was the person with tears in my eyes when I dropped the card in the box to say that she would not be attending Williams or Amherst and I still have a soft spot for both schools.

My recommendation is if you can to attend the admitted student days at all three schools and make your decision.

Both are good schools. I’d pick based on the town. If the fast-paced urban hustle and bustle of Hanover, NH is too much for you, pick Williams.

I think coureur is trying to be humorous. Ha ha ha.

Ditto here S had the same issue last April, all 3 are terrific schools and you have to feel comfortable with your decision. Visit all three this month if you can. Also consider the Quarter system (D-Plan) v the semester system. Distance from a major city, the 5 college consortium for Amherst. What a problem to have. Although the scale tipped in favor of Big Green, you will get an awesome education at each of these schools.

Are you into the frat/sorority scene? Still big at Dartmouth, but frats were disbanded with the introduction of co-education at Williams, meaning more integration of scholar-athletes within the student body. Can’t go wrong with either.

personally, there seem to be more opportunities at dartmouth in my opinion than at amherst, although i can’t really be sure because i’ve done the most research at dartmouth.

to me, it seems like studying abroad, attaining internships at the relatively larger dartmouth is superior to a small liberal arts college because of 1. name recognition and 2. superior alumni network (if not in closeness, then in numbers)

the research opportunities seem to be similar at dartmouth and williams/amherst, although i would give amherst the edge because of its enormous endowment/student population.

unfortunately, the amherst admitted student visit day coincides with dimensions at dartmouth, so visiting both would be impossible

in the end, academically both are similar, although dartmouth probably has better job placement out of college while amherst has similiar or better graduate school placement…

what the decision really rests on is 1. do u like the frat scene, outdoorsy nature of the school, and the seclusion, or 2. do u like the feel of a small liberal arts school?

i am still in high school and these are my observations…

tough decision…

No, he has a point. Hanover, NH may be small and isolated by Ivy League standards, but it’s highly urbanized compared to Willliamstown, MA.

For example, I hear that Hanover has traffic lights and parking meters now.

Which one does better with finance/consulting recruiting?

^^Dartmouth

^^actually, at least neck-and-neck (WSJ places Williams with HYPS in terms of top business school matriculation and Williams has a strong pipe-line to Wall Street).

Dad2, the answer is Dartmouth :)
