Dartmouth Winter Carnival Protest

My daughter is a '19 so we do not have anything to base the current campus climate upon. I am becoming more concerned as details are coming out over the treatment of students who either chose to not support the Black Lives Matter protestors or attempted to remain neutral and mind their own business.
There is now a meeting called for this afternoon at 3:30pm to discuss the need for changing the theme of this year’s Winter Carnival from “The Cat in the Hat Comes to Winter Carnival” to “Snow Justice, Snow Peace”. The statement was The Cat in the Hat theme does not recognise the urgency of student safety and address the issues of race and social justice.
What happens if it isn’t changed? What happens if it is? Where do the demands stop? Based upon just a 3 hour window last week I’m worried about her safety.
Are their any alumni or parents that could provide insight into whether what is happening now is a frequent occurrence? Are protests and these type of responses typical on the campus? Did they ever fear for themselves or their children? We are 2,000 miles away from campus and that, I know, is contributing to my unease.

There’s a Dartmouth parent group over in the Dartmouth forum, have you posted there?

@OHMomof2 I have not. I’m fairly new to College Confidential and assumed that the Dartmouth College forum was for student posts. Is it permissible then for my parent inquiry to be posted in that forum?

There are safety issues at Dartmouth I might actually worry about. http://www.newsweek.com/2014/09/19/americas-best-and-drunkest-269866.html

“Snow Justice, Snow Peace” isn’t one of them.

@saffysmum : It would be perfectly appropriate to post your concerns/questions in the Dartmouth forum.

There is a parent thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/899381-dartmouth-parents-thread.html

@JHS I am aware that there are other issues on campus including the drinking culture and sexual assault. Those issues are being actively addressed according to my daughter and she feels very comfortable in that regard.
My concern is the actions of the protestors last Thursday. They verbally and physically assaulted those that would not join them. To boil my concerns in my post down to a name change for Winter Carnival is patronising.

@OHMomof2 Thank you for your help. I will post there.

@AboutTheSame I saw the reply of @OHMomof2 before yours. Thank you as well for answering my inquiry. I was reluctant to post in Dartmouth College forum directly as so many students utilise that and I didn’t want my concern to be one that they dwell on.
