Data comparing liberal arts colleges in the sciences

I posted some data on # of PhDs by LACs graduates in another thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1881324-table-of-colleges-and-university-that-produce-awardees-of-nsf-graduate-fellowships-p1.html

But thought I’d start a separate one on the small LACs, specifically the “Oberlin Group”. I’ll post some data crunching I did related to strengths in the sciences (more geared towards hard sciences). My D was looking at LACs and it was hard figure out which ones were especially strong in the sciences. This info helped us figure out schools to explore, esp schools that were strong but not impossible to get into (and afford).

One of the things many LACs hyped on the tours was the number of Fulbright Scholars they had. Here’s the data for the Oberlin Group broken out by teaching and research Fulbrights. Sorry for the wretched formatting.

Number of Fulbright Scholars 2011 to 2015
from http://us.fulbrightonline.org/component/filter/
There are two types of Fulbrights for US students.

To do research in another country and to teach English in another country.
I have listed these separately.

Another look at production of graduate students by the Oberlin Group of small LAC colleges (+ a few more similar ones that I added). This is the baccalaureate origins (where they got their bachelors) of PhDs in the hard sciences from 2004 to 2014. I downloaded the data from here: https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/webcaspar

Similar to this table, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19567186/#Comment_19567186 but I downloaded the PhD field detail so I could break out CS and Math. Numbers are a little lower since NSF must have aggregated more fields than I did for their aggregated table (which I used first).

What’s the Oberlin Group?

Any reason colleges appear out of numerical sequence in “Fulbrights-English/Teaching” and may often be listed twice?

That first chart is so confusing that I chose to ignore it.

The Fulbright table above has 3 separate columns: 1 for teaching Fulbrights, 1 for research Fulbrights, and 1 for the total Fulbrights. Colleges appear once in each column. To make it easier to read, here are the Research and Teaching Fulbrights separately.

Those are numbers not percentages, so you’re not getting the full picture. A percentage would take into account variation in size of student body.

Pardon my ignorance of Fulbright scholarships, but a quick look at their website leads me to believe they are not just for science, and if so, most of what you have posted has very little to do with strength of science programs at LACS.

Yes, I realized after posting that I should have changed the title. The Fulbright Scholars are not just science.

I’ve been mainly looking at #s of PhDs in the sciences and was thinking of the 2nd table when I wrote the title, but the # Fulbright Scholars was something that came up in many tours of LACs. And I was curious about that too so looked it up.

Regarding the size of the institution, yes some are smaller than others. So you have to take that into account. Pitzer and Scripps are smaller LACs (~1000) so their #s are especially high per student.

You might also want to look at med school admissions. Many very bright undergrad science students pursue medicine rather than PhD/academia/research careers.

@marvin100 I thought about that but couldn’t find that data. It was pretty easy to download the PhD data from NSF.

Small liberal arts colleges (mainly the ‘Oberlin 50’) sorted by PhD production in the hard sciences with some extra info on the colleges. The detail on degrees in which the PhD was awarded is here:

@liska21 : I’ve since realized that my question (post 4) related to the way I was holding my device. Held sideways, the formatting is clear. Thanks.

A few comments. The table is sorted by the # of PhDs produced 2004-2014 who got their degree from the LAC. This gives you a sense of the size of the hard sciences departments at these schools. LACs near the top have large and strong science departments.

However the schools vary considerably in size, from under 1000 to 3000. So also consider the column PhD.per.1000. This is the # of PhDs in the hard sciences per 1000 students enrolled. Looking at this, you see that some small LACs are very strong per capita producers of PhDs though the absolute number is not as large. Haverford in particular jumps out on the per capita production.

The per capita column (PhD.per.1000) also gives you an idea of how science intense the school is. The schools with high numbers in this columns are known for their “intensity”: Harvey Mudd (384), Carleton (218), Swarthmore (187), Haverford (162), Williams (138), and Reed (132). This doesn’t mean “better”, but gives you a sense of the character of hard sciences at the school: the fraction of students are majoring in the hard sciences plus what fraction go on to graduate school.

The %Need column indicates what % need is met. Note however that I did not list if the school is ‘need blind’. Not all the schools that meet 100% of need are ‘need blind’. A few schools jump out as very strong in hard sciences, easier to get into, and meet 99-100% need. Reed OR (48% admin), St Olaf MN (59%), Smith MA (43%, women’s), Mt Holyoke MA (46%, women’s), Trinity U TX (64%), Franklin & Marshall PA (39%), Occidental CA (42%), Augustana SD (68%) and Dickinson PA (44%). There are also of course the well-known,very hard to get into, strong in science LACs that meet 100% need: Williams, Harvey Mudd, Carleton, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Pomona, Amherst, Bowdoin…

The %Merit column indicates what fraction of students who don’t have ‘need’ (meaning EFC > school cost) get merit aid. The Award column is the average size of merit awards. A few schools jump out as being both strong in the hard sciences and giving substantial merit aid (>10% and >10000 average). Oberlin OH, St Olaf MN, Grinnell IA, Mt Holyoke MA, Macalester MN, College of Wooster OH, Trinity Univ TX, U of Puget Sound WA, Furman SC, Gustavus Adolphus MN, Kalamazo OH, Lawrence U, Augustana SD, and that’s just for those with more than 100 in the PhD.Prod column.

This table shows the number of two prestigious awards for graduate study in the hard sciences that have been awarded to this list of LACs. Sorted by total number of Goldwater and NSF scholars.

Size = enrollment 2013-2014

Goldwater = Goldwater Scholars 2006-2016. From their website.

NSF = NSF Graduate Student scholarships 2010-2016. Only awards for study in the hard sciences are listed. Where I got the data is described here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1881324-table-of-colleges-and-university-that-produce-awardees-of-nsf-graduate-fellowships-p1.html
Total = Goldwater + NSF columns.

.per.capita = 1000 x Total/Size since the schools vary in size I also show the per capita # of these awards

Fulbright = Fulbright RESEARCH awards for graduate study overseas in the hard sciences. There are 2 types of Fulbright student awards, for graduate student study abroad and for teach English. I looked only at the graduate student awards and only for study in the hard sciences.

A few comments on this table.

These two awards are very hard to get and you have to have had research experience and mentorship during your undergrad years. So a high number of these awards shows that the school both has students with talent/interest in the hard sciences and also invests heavily in mentoring students in the hard sciences.

Most of the LACs at the top of this table are not surprising, but there are a few real surprises. Calvin College and Hope College in Michigan. They are on the big side, 3400-3800 students, but must have very strong science departments. Admit rate for both is ca 70%, so I’m guessing they also target a small percentage of students who are strong in the sciences. Then there are a bunch of schools you don’t hear mentioned too much but pull in many of these awards: Lafayette, Colorado College, Lewis and Clark, Kenyon, Barnard, Hamilton, Hendrix (you never hear that school mentioned on CC…). Scipps also stands out as a school that doesn’t produce too many students that go on to get PhDs in the hard sciences, but those that do have a much higher rate of doing so on a prestigious award.

I didn’t add the Fulbright into the total since the Fulbright is for students to study abroad, so the school might have many Goldwaters and NSF but few Fulbrights if few students want to study abroad. There are four schools that stand out as having an unusually high number of students who get Fulbrights to study the hard sciences abroad (1000 x Fulbrights/Size > 4): Pomona, Smith, Davidson and Occidental. Followed a second high group (1000 x Fulbrights/Size > 3): Swarthmore, Carleton, St. Olaf, Wellesley, Amherst, Bowdoin, Haverford and New College of FL.

Hamilton is rated #14 in USWR so no surprise there.
