daughter interested in becoming an art therapist

She will be attending Trinity College (CT) in fall 2006 as freshman.

She is considering majoring in Psycology and a minor in studio arts.

She is trying to find out about grad schools that offer art therapy MA....in Ny seems NYU is best and Hofstra and CW Post also.

NYU wants 30 cr art 30 psycology.........this pretty much spells a double major, which I think is too much work being that she also plans on doing an honors program called guided studies and wants to leave room for work study, clubs and activities.

She wants to see if she can intern and do research in Hartford to gain experience as well.

She would like to schedule courses so that she will be fexible enough to have a semester abroad( Trinity has an art program in Barcelona Spain)

She would like her course selection to reflect enough flexibility to give her several options upon graduating her BA degree. Such as plan courses carefully to allow going into art education by pursuing a MA in Art Education, or perhaps stay w/ straght psycology and apply to a PhD program in one of the psycology avenues, or as she feels most strongly about pursuing a MA in art therapy.

Anyone know a student who is in grad school for art therapy, art education, or psycology? What majors/minors/courses did they take undergrad? How can she best prepare for grad scholl and interns and career path in these subjects?

Thanks

Can anyone comment?

My d also has an interest in art therapy but we don't have too much information so far. She is just a junior in HS now but is planning on majoring in the fine arts for undergrad at either an art school or university and some of these programs mention concentrations in art therapy. I know UArts has a concentration, Pratt may, they actually have a 5 year program where you get your BFA then masters in art therapy and can decide this route in junior year. Drexel also has graduate program in art therapy. You could probably contact a couple of these schools and also do a search on art therapy to get more info. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

As a former music therapist (for 13 years), I would recommend you contact the American Art Therapy Association http://www.arttherapy.org/ for information on the field and schools that offer that major. I've worked with some great art therapists who did amazing work.

I think that the UW (Seattle) has a major in art therapy and their art dept is considered one of the best amongst state schools.
