Daughter accepted w/20k scholarship, but not honors program. Am interested in hearing from those in the know answers to the following:

Does anyone in my daughter’s spot ever appeal to get accepted into Honors, or is the only way to achieve Honors at this point to apply once in school?

Does anybody know if Sharp or Monroe has been rennovated since the late 1970’s?

What is the Wall dorm like and how hard is it for a freshman to get accepted into it?

Is the only way into Butler through being in Honors, or can others apply as well?

Lots of questions, I know. I’m an alum who is a bit out of touch on these sorts of things. Appreciate any guidance!

I have a senior S at Tulane. I can't answer all your questions, but can comment on one. He was in Monroe during his freshman year. At that time, it had been renovated, but Sharp had not. However, I've heard that perhaps Sharp may have been updated since then which would mean it would be "newer" than Monroe.

Honestly, he really liked Monroe--a decent sized space, nice view, good location on campus. He did complain about the bathrooms---shared by floor,
plumbing issues,etc.

I'm not too sure about appealing to get in. Best bet is to talk to someone that has to do with the program and ask. If she does really well though her freshman year, they will offer her a spot for the next year.

Sharp and Monroe are pretty outdated. They aren't disgusting or anything, but they are pretty basic dorms with community bathrooms. Most people don't have a problem with them though and end up really enjoying them for the opportunity to meet a lot of people. Although other dorms may be nicer, most people prefer to live in either for the social aspect.

Wall isn't hard to get into. It takes one essay to apply, which is enough to ward off most people from applying. I've never heard of anyone who said they were turned down because like I was saying, most people prefer to live in Monroe or Sharpe.

You can live in Butler without being in the Honors Program. Honors kids obviously get first dibs at it, but there are open spots and it's not too hard to get in. Just talk to someone in housing.

1) I'm pretty sure you can apply for it midyear, the only requirement is that you have "Dean's Listable GPA of 3.5", whereas retention of Honors if you started in it is 3.4ish for freshmen and sophomores.

2) Sharp/Monroe have been updated, but some students complain that these are the generalist dorms that most freshmen get crammed into.

3) Wall is really nice, but non-Wallians commonly say, "Better rooms don't make better people!" I have many friends in Wall and don't see a major difference, but there are far less dorm gatherings than Monroe/Sharp.

Paterson is an alternative to Wall, often referred to as an eighties version of Wall.

All the dorms have plus and minuses and cost about the same, but special preferences such as single bed or suite may up the price a bit.

4) It helps to have a friend in Butler. Roommate preferences usually work out.

Thanks Trojantransfer? This is helpful stuff. Glad to hear that Sharp and Monroe have been updated from the old days! I know that there have been many improvements to the campus since I left - eg., the new Freeman School of Business - but was not aware of the dorm update situation. Thanks again.
