Wall or Monroe???

My daughter will be attending Tulane as a freshman. We are really happy with this decision. Somehow Tulane was somewhere in the middle of her college list and once we visited moved to her number 1 choice as soon as we walked onto the campus. As a mom, first child going off to college, my dilemma is she is eligible to dorm at Wall which to me looked a little nicer than Monroe and also shares a bathroom (no communal showers) both are big pluses to me. My daughter wants to dorm in Monroe because she wants that freshman dorm experience her first year and the tour guide that we met dormed at Monroe and said it would be a great choice. Does anyone have any opinions as to what would be the better choice? Wall seemed quieter, a little nicer and might be better for studying. Any thoughts from parents going through the same situation or students that lived in either Monroe or Wall? Thanks so much for any insight!

If your daughter is looking for that typical dorm experience you should let her try out Monroe. Wall is much quieter and does not have the same social aspects. It is newer, cleaner, quieter , the rooms are larger and it will now house the honors program. But if that’s not what your daughter wants she may not be happy there. Students have many places on campus to study other than their rooms. My son lived in Wall and he loved it, but he is not a party person and he enjoyed the more low key vibe of Wall.

Agree with @dolphnlvr6, there have been Honors students in the past that wanted the more typical freshman dorm such as Monroe or Sharp and were very happy they did it. And their grades were excellent. So I think if a student is expressing that opinion, let them go for it, because the upperclassman dorms are almost all suite style. So she will get that as well, most likely.

Thank you for the voices of reason. Monroe it shall be

Freshman year my daughter lived it Monroe and loved it! While a communal bathroom doesn’t sound appealing to you, it is part of the experience. There is an advantage to the communal bathroom, it gets cleaned daily! Sophomore year, living in a suite, they are responsible for cleaning their own bathroom!

Our sophomore daughter has lived in Wall for two years and has really enjoyed it. She got the “freshman experience” and was able to balance classes (she’s an Altman Scholar so she carries a heavy course load), extracurricular activities and a social life. As a visiting parent, I liked the size of the rooms, the bathroom set-up and the fairly subdued atmosphere. Wall’s proximity to Bruff, and the LBC is another bonus. Good luck to your daughter! Roll Wave!

So glad your D is doing so well and is enjoying Wall. Personally I also would take it over Monroe, where I lived all 4 years at Tulane (there was no Wall then). But that’s the beauty of it. There is a real choice for freshmen now. I do have to say, though, that for most the “freshman experience” in Monroe and Sharp really is different than for the other dorms. Just the nature of the layout.

I hope she is enjoying being an Altman Scholar as well. I think it is a very exciting offering by Tulane. She must be getting ready for a summer abroad, once she is done with finals. Can you share her feelings about the program and where she is off to?

MY D is graduating with her Masters next month. She is in the honors program and lived in Monroe her freshman year. She loved it! There are study lounges and the library if you need quiet but she wanted the social aspects of Monroe. Don’t worry she wil be fine. And congrats, my D has spent 5 wonderful years at Tulane!
