My daughter won several scholarships at our high school's senior awards night. Four of them had a check enclosed, but the last one (from the local Democratic committee) did not. The representative did not show up to award the scholarship that night, but had notified the school that my daughter was the winner. The guidance department has contacted them several times, and no one is replying. Turns out, that a member of this committee hates my husband for various reasons. They choose the winner blindly and I am afraid they are now withholding the funds because of this member's feelings for my husband.

Have your daughter call the chair of the local Democratic committee to thank him and (incidentally) to ask him about the check. If he stonewalls her, call the local paper.

Most of DD’s scholarship checks were sent directly to the school by the organization after she provided proof of enrollment. She only got a couple checks directly, and those were issued separate from the award letter, with both her name and the school’s name on them.

I think I’d have your daughter ask the school to handle it–the guidance office, I guess. It was the school’s awards night, so your husband’s personal/professional relationships should have nothing to do with it, and the further he is from the issue, the better (hence having your daughter handle it).

My son won a state level scholarship and received “notice” of the award, but not an actual check. He had not chosen his college at the time because this happened junior year of HS. My son was asked to send the name and address of the college once it was chosen. At that point (a year later), the national organization cut a check and mailed it directly to my son’s college. Perhaps this group works the same way. I would have your guidance dept contact the group (or you should write a letter) asking what the procedure is to claim the scholarship and inquire if any information (college name, address, etc) needs to be supplied.

A few years back, my son received a scholarship from a local group (Elks maybe?) for a summer program and their bylaws required them to write the check directly to the school (and not the student). We supplied the information and it took at least a month for the check to be sent.

I know I’ve been waiting for a check to come for a scholarship… it’s been over six months since I won it, and I was told it should come directly to me. I’d say wait a decent amount of time (if she’s a senior who needs college funds, though, six months is definately too long), then do the above suggestion of contacting the paper if there’s still been no reply.

Guidance has been trying to handle it, but is getting nowhere. They said that the check is given directly to the student, not the college, and that their contact at the Democratic Committee has always been great about returning e-mails/phone calls.

My D has received empty envelopes too, but the local organizations let her know that they need a form (provided) sent in and that the checks will be mailed late in the summer. In many organizations, the treasurer cuts checks at certain intervals because they often need a separate signature. It sounds like the scholarship paperwork may not have reached the treasurer in time. If it’s been over a month since the award, I would have the student write to the committee, thanking them for the honor and asking them if she needs to provide additional information in order to receive the funds. If she receives no response by early August, I would let the school handle it. At our school, all scholarships given at awards night need the approval of the Superintendent/School Board.

^ Good point, NSM…I swear, if you hadn’t posted earlier tonight that you were a college professor, I’d think you were really my mom, upstairs on another computer! It’s freaky weird how you sound like her.

After more proding from the guidance department, my daughter finally received her scholarship! She was sent an apology letter with a check enclosed today. They said it was a “snafu”. Don’t know exactly what went on. Here’s hoping the check doesn’t bounce! It is written on the Democratic Committee account afterall, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Glad it turned out okay…I have a similar situation and I think I have to wait until I actually enroll in classes and provide proof of enrollment that the check will be sent to my college
