Davidson 2023 RD applicants

Hello everyone. Can’t find the ED thread, so I hope it is OK that I post here. Our son is going to apply to Davidson for ED. 1470 SAT (770 Math/700 English), 4.61 WGPA and 3.7 UWGPA. His WGPA is lower because we transferred from PA in his sophomore year and some of the silly class were weighted fully in SC and brought his WGPA down (example of where an “A” can still bring you down).

10 AP classes, captain of high school swim team (Champions) and All state swimmer, member of All state Orchestra and lead Viola for his high school orchestra. We have had three visits to Davidson. First was an official visit/tour, second was a recruiting weekend and the third was to meet a professor. He loves the campus and school but unfortunately he won’t be offered a swimming spot (thanks SC swimming!). But he still wants to go to Davidson as he loves it. What do people think his shot is realistically?

@scwimdad – sounds like a great fit and chance to me! The GPA is a little low, but with the right context hopefully that won’t matter. Good luck!

@scswimdad I think he has a shot.

Deferred. :frowning:

Sorry to hear this but don’t give up – better than denied still has a chance during RD. Good luck!

Thanks. But very disappointed and now are looking hard at other schools. I will contact the admissions officer and see if they have any insight into the concerns.

Understood. My advice is the student should initiate any contact as we parents should only be guides on the side. Again, good luck!

Accepted!

So sorry. Hold him close. It will be ok.

anyone who applied ed 1 care to comment abt their stats? I feel like davidson keeps getting more and more competitive. my stats fell into last years 50% range but idk if they will if it gets more competitive this yr.

Scswimdad—I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully the Admissions Office has some good and helpful advice for him. I have always believed that there is no such thing as a “dream school.” There are so many choices and sometimes, you just need to have faith that your kid will land in the right place. It might still be Davidson, who knows? Good luck to you!

@JanieMae I applied ED1 from Texas to Davidson college this year. It was definitely a reach for me, but it was my top choice and I felt was the best fit for me.

Result: Admitted

My stats:
SAT1: 1530, 800 Math, 730 Verbal
SATII: 760 Math II, US and World History over 700
Weighted: between a 4.2 and 4.3
Unweighted: Low 3.7, Core Only: mid 3.6, somewhat upward trend (3.9 frosh, 3.3 soph because of health issues - explained in addl info section - and 3.8something junior year)
Rank: HS is very small and highly competitive so no ranking policy but estimated top 10-15%
Other:
No hooks
EC’s: Decent but nothing superb
Recs: 3 - all probably very good, one from history teacher, Econ teacher, and bio teacher
Counselor rec - probably very good too, had a close relationship with all of the teachers/counselor writing my recs
Essays: Had my Common App essay reviewed numerous times, IMO told a good story about me and my interest in IR.
Why Davidson - Used a lot of info from my visit
Extracurricular essay - talked about me going to India and doing a service project there
AP’s: took 9 exams, all passed, mostly 4’s and 5’s, but one 3. National AP Scholar
IB DP Candidate
Major: Econ/Political Sci something along those lines
Awards: Multiple awards in Geo/History, one national award as well.
Other: I showed a ton of interest in Davidson from the beginning, I got in for the fly-in and went to visit in October for the fly-in program, and spoke to the rep on many occasions.
Strengths: SAT, Essays, Recs, Awards, Fly-in/Other demonstrated interest
Weaknesses: the GPA, very very low

Good luck to everyone applying RD and ED2! No matter what, you always have a chance! Stay positive, even though the process is sooooo overwhelmingly stressful. These days, there is always a huge luck factor especially with elite schools like Davidson. I never believed I would get in, but God was definitely there for me. Hope the luck is in your favor! If I don’t mess up IB stuff and if my teachers give me decent grades on finals in Semester 1 and decent grades in Semester 2, I’ll be in NC. It would be really awesome to meet you guys there!

D19 visited last March, and loved it!! Definitely first choice. Met with rep in Houston in October. GC nominated her for
the Belk scholars program, applied to Davidson RD and now we wait. Long shot for scholarship, but she said they can only say no. We are not full pay, so without the aid, we will have to sadly close that door.

@momcatof4 if you aren’t full pay then you may get need based financial aid and may not need a merit scholarship.

@homerdog from your lips to the FA demigod!! We have NM schools lined up as backups, but this would be a true fit.

@momcatof4 – Running the college’s NPC should give you a good sense of what the need-based financial aid package would be. We found Davidson generous with its definition of need aid – and they have a no student loan policy which is great. Good luck!!

@elena13 —hello! I read recently on a different thread that you had a kid go thru the Davidson scholarship interview process a few years ago. Can you tell me a bit what it was like? What to expect? Thanks in advance.

@LakeAlto -My D17 was called a couple of days before the RD decisions were released (by an English professor) and notified that she was a finalist for their big creative writing scholarship. We went to Davidson around the end of the first week in April and she attended an event on Thursday evening with some students and professors from the English department. On Friday she did interviews and other meetings and there was a nice lunch and dinner for parents and prospective students. There were students interviewing for other scholarships related to leadership etc. (can’t remember if there were Belk applicants or if that had already been decided). There were also some students there who had already been awarded scholarships. The next day was an admitted students event so additional kids and families were there and they had typical events for all. I think the students who were competing for scholarships that weekend were notified by mid April regarding their award.

That is helpful, thank you!

I know that it’s a long while away, but does anyone if RD decisions are always posted on April 1st (as the website indicates), or if this date has varied in the past?
