Davidson Fellows

I really didn't know where to post this, so I just posted it here (sorry if there was a better place to post this).

So 2 part question: approximately how long does it take to start and finish a davidson fellow application? And also, does anyone know approximately what the deadline will be for 2014 applications?

In case somebody can answer your question - I want to add my own question too - Do the Davidson fellows accept Economic research, and not just Pure science oriented research?

You might try posting this over in the Parents’ Forum. Good luck!

Or, better yet, you might try emailing the folks at the Davidson Institute with your questions: DavidsonFellows@davidsongifted.org

Hey Derek1, the Davidson Fellow Application is quite long (not gruesome though). You just need to put together a portfolio of your work and a video of up to 10 minutes long, so this depends on the person how long it takes. My work was already organized for the most part, so it took me just under a month (spending perhaps 30 minutes- 1 hours per day) to finish my portfolio.

The deadline for 2013 applications was February 2013, so I am fairly certain that once applications are available, it will be due February 2014-ish.

Aspirationist, Davidson’s should accept anything that is of “exceptional finding”, if you know what I mean. They don’t really have strict set guidelines. I’ve seen people win the top Davidson’s awards on things they discovered relating to mathematics theory, so if economics is what you’ve done, and you think you did something special, go for it!

Derek, you also need 3 recommenders, and you need to write some essay answers to certain questions, forgot to mention that! Usually these questions are pertaining to the relevance/significance of your project to the real-world, so they really aren’t too stressing.

Thanks terminatorp - Do they accept applications from non-U.S citizens?

Hey thanks for the responses guys!

@terminatorp One more question. My thing that I would apply with (in the outside the box category) is for a free program I created. I guess you could call it a community service project. When I emailed the davidson fellows, they told me that they don’t accept community service projects. However If i focused on other aspects of my program, for example the unique methods I use in the program and why they work, do you think I could at least get an honorable mention?

Here is the requirement regarding citizenship:

Dammit! Might as well throw my thesis away :frowning:
Because, where I live, there are no research opportunities for kids belonging to my nationality.

Thanks @intparent…

Sniff

Hey Aspirationist, it’s definitely a downer, but there’s so much other things to do, like participate in the Intel ISEF, or ISWEEEP International Science Fairs! I did those as well as a junior last year!

Derek1, it’s worth a try! While Davidson’s focuses on NOVEL discoveries, or explanations in a set field, like Science, English, Mathematics, if you can show that whatever you have done or discovered is SIGNIFICANT to the world in some way, then it’s fair game for Davidsons!

I felt just like you when I started, as in, whether my project would even matter to them or not. After I applied, I found out I won their $25,000 scholarship, so it’s never worth it (literally) to not try!

Yeah, that’s good to hear, but neither of them host Economic research :(

You can do math and then talk about how that applies to econ? I wouldn’t rely on science fairs though. I love them and really enjoy the experience but the judging is not always great. Try and publish somewhere solid or write a review.

Aspirationist, by the way, what do you mean by “there’s no research opportunities for kids belonging to my nationality”?? What country are you from?

I’m Indian - but I live in the middle east, where they give first priority to their own citizens - which makes sense. But I don’t have an alternative - and I certainly can’t go to India.
