Hi,

I'm currently admitted to Davidson and Notre Dame, and it's been a long struggle to decide which one to go for. Personally I don't care about name recognition, but am a fan of a quality education. How strong is the department of English at Davidson? Are the professors really That willing to help, like having office hour all day and inviting students to eat at their houses? examples please? I was looking into the class size, but found the maximum capacity to be 30, which isn't all that different from Notre Dame. Please give some advice/reality check =]

THANKS!

If you’re looking for intimacy between students and professors, there is no question that Davidson is superior in that regard. Classes are capped at 30 here, but I’m an English major, and have never been in an english class with more than 20 students. I have eaten dinner at two of my professors houses, gone to a concert with one of them, and can tell you in all honesty that they are accessible beyond my wildest dreams. I’m not sure what class sizes are like at Notre Dame, but I’m sure some of the intro classes will be huge. You’ll also be competing with graduate students for attention.

There’s a lot to be criticized about a small rigorous school like Davidson, and I could understand choosing somewhere bigger for a number of reasons. But if what you care about is personal relationships with professors, classroom intimacy, and deep involvement in your own education, then I think there’s really no contest between these schools.
