How does admission into a day school compare to boarding school? Is it easier, since it's a more limited pool of applicants? Just curious, because it seems from what I've been reading that some kids apply to day schools as "back-ups" to boarding school, so I would infer that it's easier to get into boarding schools. But around here, it sounds as if they're just as competitive, bc they've got a smaller number of slots to fill. Any thoughts?

We are applying to both and here in NYC there are more applicants than seats for day school. What I’ve noticed this admissions cycle (letters arrived on 2/12). Is that many of the kids in our class got multiple admits…I’m talking about 4-6 offers each kid. Most of the kids in my dd class applied anywhere from 4-8 schools…so mostly everyone got into everywhere they wanted except for the kids who need FA (day school). It’s been a very hard year for them. The kids asking for FA (most of them) were WL everywhere. The only kid applying for FA at a day school that got a spot was from a family that were asking for very little FA. The other kids are still hoping for a spot and the school is working to get them one. It wasn’t only in our school but everyone I know applying out for HS and kindergarten asking for FA got WL. This is shocking since I’ve been around for many years and I’ve never seen it this bad for FA families. There are two kids in my dd class that needed FA and got it got offered from BS with rolling admissions, As for boarding, I think since there are more boarding school options than day schools where we live…I think it will be easier to get a spot in BS…but that means any BS I don’t mean the most desired ones. My assumption about BS is just that an assumption…this is our first time applying so we will soon see if it will be easier for us compared to our day school results

I live near a well known school I’m applying to as a day student, and there was a gathering for all of the applicants in my school who were applying there. There was an AO who spoke to us, and from my understanding, it is easier to get in (at least for that particular school) as a day student because they really don’t need to worry about running out of beds or dorms to place you in. I think day students there get lockers , but I suppose that isn’t as big of an issue as beds or rooms. She implied that we could have a few extra day students than needed, which wouldn’t be a big problem, but over admitting boarding students might pose an issue.
