Day Schools

From all the time I have spent on college confidential, I have not found a lot of threads relating to Day Schools. It seems that mostly Boarding Schools get a lot of the love (not that there is anything wrong with that). On this thread, you can ask and answer questions relating to day schools. I don’t have much experience with day schools, as this is my 3rd year with day school experience. However, I have gotten admittance to a couple of schools this year and will try to answer as many questions as I can.

Thanks. A welcome addition to this site.

Might be useful to start with a list of some of the prominent day schools. I’ll start. No meaning intended in the order.

I love this thread!

DD will be starting middle school at Greenwich Academy this fall. We had a tough time choosing between GA and Rye Country Day but ultimately the community feel at GA won us over.

I’d love to here from any parents/students with experience with GA.

@GreenIndian I don’t know most of the schools - but you seem to. I think it’s a great thread too - esp as we may consider moving before DD goes to HS (hence not sure BS or a Day school in another state). Plus, I’m sure there must be way more Day schools, so if people could add them (by location), that would make an excellent resource.

In Massachusetts, curious to know more about: Concord Academy, Noble and Greenough and BB&N… specifically most curious about their social culture… or wondering if anyone has any standout pros and cons, for a female day student… thanks!!! @ilikesharks44 thank you for starting this!!

@applehoney I also have the same question regarding BB&N

Really need to be listed by major city. Boston area, NYC area, LA area, DC area, etc.

I’ve created another thread regarding day schools in Boston, hopefully that one will catch on…

Thanks for starting this! We are looking at day schools in the NY/Greenwich area and it is hard to find any information other than from the schools themselves so I appreciate any feedback about local area schools as well. We are actually looking at Kindergarten at this point but I’ve noticed I’m not the only parent on College Confidential learning about schools for younger children. We want to give them the best start and most of these schools go all the way through high school.

We are in Westchester Country so we are looking at schools just outside of NYC in Westchester, or in Greenwich, CT, which borders Westchester. For example, Greenwich, CT kids attend Rye Country Day and Rye, NY kids attend Greenwich Country Day. They are very close to each other. Some of these schools are close enough to the city that they attract NYC families as well.

Greenwich Country Day just merged with Stanwich school this year and now goes through 12th grade. It is a major feeder school to many boarding schools so it will be interesting to see what happens now that it is becoming a K-12 day school.

Here is a list of highly regarded Westchester Country / Greenwich area schools. I’m including some lesser known gems (such as K-8 schools) that feed into top high schools and colleges.

Rye Country Day School
Hackley
Masters (6-12)
Ethical Culture Fieldston
Horace Mann
Whitby (PK-8)
Resurrection (PK-8)
Sacred Heart Greenwich (aka Convent of the Sacred Heart)
Greenwich Academy
Brunswick
Greenwich Country Day (now PK-12)
School of the Holy Child
Green Meadows
King School
Carmel Academy
French American School
The Harvey School (6-12)
Solomon Schechter
Hudson Country Montessori School (PK-8)
Rippowam Cisqua

I know very little about some of the schools I put on this list but just enough to include them. Resurrection for example, a small Catholic school in Rye, only goes to 8th grade and students go on to attend many excellent prep schools like Rye Country Day and Sacred Heart Greenwich. Green Meadows is a Waldorf School. King is in Stamford but very popular with families in neighboring Greenwich. Hackley, Masters, and the Harvey School have boarders in high school along with day students. Carmel (in Greenwich) and Solomon Schechter (in White Plains) are Jewish. Sacred Heart, Greenwich Academy, and Holy Child are all girls, Brunswick is all boys. Greenwich Academy and Brunswick students have co-ed classes together in high school.

Thanks for starting this thread!

We are in Westchester County in between NYC and Greenwich, CT. Here are some well regarded schools In Westchester County/Greenwich. I’m including some lesser known gems that feed into top prep schools and colleges. For example, Resurrection is a small co-ed Catholic K-8 prep school in Rye where students go on to attend Rye Country Day and Sacred Heart Greenwich, among others. Some of these schools are not very far from the city and attract students from NYC. (Hackley, Horace Mann, Masters, Fieldston and RCDS all have a significant number of NYC kids, especially in high school)

Westchester/Greenwich Schools

Rye Country Day School
Hackley
Brunswick
Greenwich Academy
Sacred Heart Greenwich
Ethical Culture Fieldston
Whitby (PK-8)
Resurrection (PK-8)
School of the Holy Child
Carmel Academy
King
Greenwich Country Day (now PK-12)
Horace Mann
Harvey School (6-12)
Masters (6-12)
Solomon Schechner
French American School
Green Meadows
Hudson Country Montessori (PK-8)

I know more about some of these schools than others, but just enough to include the ones I know little about.

A few random notes- Solomon Schlechter (in White Plains) and Carmel (in Greenwich) are Jewish. Sacred Heart, Resurrection, and Holy Child are Catholic. The better Catholic schools (like these) tend to attract students of all faiths. Greenwich Country Day just merged with Stanwich and is now PK-12. It was previously just through 8th and many typically go on to boarding schools so it will be interesting to see what happens there. Brunswick is all boys. Sacred Heart, Greenwich Academy and Holy Child are all girls. Brunswick and Greenwich Academy share co-ed classes together in high school. King is in Stamford and popular with neighboring Greenwich families. Green Meadows is a Waldorf school. Masters, Hackley, and Harvey have some boarding students (5-day boarding) in high school.

Westchester County is known for having excellent public schools. Rye and Scarsdale have a reputation of sending many students to Ivy League schools, and even New Rochelle High School was just featured this year as having all 8 Ivy League Schools accept students from their 2018 graduating class. Therefore, the private schools are extremely good in this area as they need to compete with all that the large excellent public schools have to offer.

We are not from here originally and are looking at (and learning about) schools in the area for kindergarten. I’ve noticed that I’m not the only parent on this site looking at schools for young kids as we want to give them the best start we can! We are applying this fall (2018) for admission next year (fall 2019). We have personally visited Hackley, Rye Country Day, Greenwich Country Day, and Resurrection. We are possibly adding other schools from this list to visit in the fall when they have Open Houses. We’ve spoken to parents and students at many of these schools but are still getting to know what each school is like. We’ve done our research but you still need to piece together the info you get from the schools themselves along with what you hear from current and former students, teachers, and parents, and even look into any rumors and gossip (i.e. “the kids are stuck up there”) to get the full picture.

Feel free to ask me anything or add anything to this list! We definitely welcome any info, good or bad.

Just saw I posted almost the same exact thing twice. Oops. I thought my first post had been erased so I rewrote it all!

Would love to hear any feedback – particularly for middle school – on Greens Farms Academy (GFA) in Westport, CT.
