I’m going to be a day student at Choate next year, but my situation is a little unusual, so I dont know anything about the area or the incoming students. Is it true that day students and boarders don’t really mix, and how hard is it for a day student to make friends?
DD will be a day student 3rd former next year. We live 10 minutes from school, in the next town over. I have been told the first year has some separation at first, but by second semester it is a lot less. By 4th form, no difference, and no one cares. This is what I was told by several boarders and day students. Remember that you will very busy in sports, etc., so you will meet a lot of people both in and out of the classroom.
You will be arriving on campus by 7:30 and you should head over to the dining hall (after hitting your locker, which all day students are given), where everyone will be eating breakfast. All meals and even some snacks from the dining hall are available at no extra cost to all students. This was covered in your tuition. There are also some cafes and vending machines on campus; the newest café is in the Lanphier Math Building.
Plan on staying on campus until at least 8pm. Musicians tend to leave after 8pm, when last rehearsal is done. Others tends to stay until 9pm, after the study hour ends.
Every day student I know spends about 14 hours on campus, and every student I have met walking on campus has been nice, nice, and nice.
Did you just move to the area? Check out previous posts for info on the area.
