Just wrote and attempted to post a lengthy post about my DD wonderful experience at SUNY Buffalo. She just finished her first semester at University at Buffalo, which is not the same as Buffalo State. Anyway for some reason the whole post was wiped out. Oh well so frustrating!!! I will try to highlight what was in my first post.
University at Buffalo is actually in Amherst NY which is a very nice suburb.

Easy to get home to LI via Jet Blue/ Her dorm is only 15 min from Buffalo/Niagara airport.

Campus divided into North and South Campus making campus very easy to navigate

Really nice dorms for Freshman and Sophomore and for Junior and Seniors beautiful on campus garden apartments!

Many dining options/ recently opened new dining hall by freshman dorm that is the equivalent of an international food court with fire place and lounge area.

Campus includes medical school, dental school, engineering school which is ranked 54th by US News while Watson at Binghamton ranked 102nd, pharmacy school, law school, business school, architecture school

Close to Niagara Falls, Toronto and 6 malls including a Galleria Mall

DD has become involved in both Hillel and Chabbad

One of the best features SUNY Tuition for both instate and out of state residents is a GREAT value!!!

I’m really glad your D is enjoying her experience! If the winter stays mild, she should survive the spring semester without having one of those “buffalo buried in snow” events. :)

Thanks Sylvan8798,
What is a “buffalo buried in snow event”? Actually sounds like it might be fun. What is so funny it that because this child number 3 is at SUNY school and is saving us significant tuition money I let her go to town with her winter wardrobe. She def. has all the clothes and accessories she needs for a Winter in Buffalo.

Cama, nice post.
Son is graduating form UB this May.
Great, great school. Engineering experiences on campus and internships have been wonderful.

Son prefers Islip to Buffalo on SW. So easy for us, but we live much closer to Islip than JFK (son did it once and hated it- too crowded and long waits for luggage.)

For any of the STEM programs and Health Sciences, Buffalo is the way to go!

No regrets and son and GF have job offers for when they graduate already!!

Crazed,
We too live close to Islip but the only flights Southwest offers is one with a lay over in Baltimore. Did your son have to stop over in Baltimore before landing in Islip? If so how long is the flight? The flight to JFK from Buffalo is about an hour total.

Sylvan, When you were referring to a “winter snow event” I thought you meant some kind of winter feast event at UB. So I apologize for the misunderstanding. It sounds like you have first hand knowledge of such events and I do hope my DD makes it through her four years without having to experience a Buffalo blizzard. Living on LI and having recently been through hurricane Sandy I am aware of the devastating affects a natural disaster can have.

Ah, but cama, your D’s education at UB would hardly be complete without at least one of our famous events!

Hopefully one more on the fun side, less on the tragic. We have lived through many in the 27 years I’ve been here - and when you think you have seen everything, something totally different happens! :)

Cama-
Son travels from Islip to Baltimore to Buffalo, or vice versa. Yes, takes longer in air time, but the layover in Baltimore is not bad. Actually, Baltimore has a great SW terminal and the kids usually get a bite to eat, etc.

Travel time to LGA or JFK plus the additional time needed to get through security, get baggage, etc, is just not worth it. these ease of SW is so nice. Parking is ideal for us when we travel too. Going out of LGA for graduation as my Mom is in Nassau Cty. Looking forward to a quick flight, but not dealing with the airport. (Islip is so nice and clean. Pleasant for pickups too. Meet son just as he reaches security point. No crowds!!)

Snow event: Last 3 years there hasn’t been much snow to speak of in Buffalo. Hope this year is the same.
