Thanks MYOS and gettingaclue. Just dropped D and her mom at the airport. Like your D, our D loved the vibe of NOLA and Tulane when we visited two years ago. Also, we are foodies so D and her mom are excited to have some beignets and pralines and enjoy NOLA cuisine. D is still waiting to hear back from Emory and Rice (and a few others too) but obviously Tulane @ no tuition is a highly attractive offer. Hope your D enjoys the weekend and look forward to sharing notes after the weekend.
Hope it goes well!! FWIW, my DS#2 chose Tulane over Emory for a variety of reasons, and it was the right choice for him. He loved it, and stayed in NOLA for 2 additional years after graduation working nearby (in Metarie). Just moved to the West coast for a fabulous job about 10 months ago. Report back when she returns!
@jym626 - would you mind sharing why your son chose Emory, if you feel it is relevant (or not personal, or too revealing as I know some prefer to leave out some details)? Thanks!
Interesting, @Ljtrose that your high status daughter is waiting to hear from Emory. DD heard early (applied RD) and was offered $20,000 Liberal Arts Scholarship - wonder what in her application earned her that? So much we all will never know about what happens behind closed doors to influence decisions.
If I recall, there was an early deadline for scholarship consideration (even for RD kids) and we may have missed that deadline. My guess is that all who were picked for scholarships received early or earlier notifications regarding their acceptances, even if they were otherwise in the RD pool. But, as you suggest, we are all sort of left to guess about how these decisions are made behind closed doors.
Oh, yeah…all those deadlines. We missed someone’s deadline for scholarships, too…can’t recall which school…had to put it behind me. lol
I’ll send you a PM , gettingaclue
D and hubby had a great time at Honors Weekend. Loved the city, the food, the campus, and most importantly what they learned about academics, the honors program, and other programs and resources offered at Tulane. She was able to register (nonbinding) for classes and she says her schedule is “bangin’” as she was able to opt out of some intro classes b/c of her AP test scores and take more interesting, to her, classes.
Going back to Emory in a few weeks and then it is decision time!!! hang in there everyone
Thanks for the update! So glad things turned out well for her at Tulane. Now, let’s wait for Emory indeed.
OP here. Hooray!!! All decisions from schools are back and it is down to two: Emory and Tulane. I can’t believe this is almost over.
Here are the final results of her decisions: A new results…
Super reaches/lottery:
Brown: rejected - she forgot to check the decision on Ivy Day so that tells you how much Brown was on her mind…
WashU: waitlisted - this was DH’s favorite… I didn’t visit
Rice: waitlisted - D and I liked their Gender and Sexuality program the best but they only let 4 off waitlist last yr, so she moved on.
Low reaches:
Emory: accepted! $20,000 Liberal Arts Scholarship - She’s now looking as deep as possible into their Gender and Sexuality program and comparing it to Tulane’s - heading back next week for a revisit
Tulane: accepted! $30,000 Presidential Scholarship
Match:
Rhodes: accepted $20,000 merit aid - this is a really great school and I can imagine it would be a PERFECT school for someone looking for a fantastic education in a supportive environment in a beautiful community. D loved Rhodes but the school was too small and Memphis felt smaller than she expected.
American: accepted with 20,000 merit - American ended up being a surprise last-minute contender. She had an interview and the interviewer really sold the benefits of DC: internships with Women and Childrens’ organizations etc. Beautiful cloistered campus, Students seemed happy and engaged.
UMD: accepted 1/2 tuition - in state - OK she was never going to like UMD so they could have been perfect but she still would have found something not to like. She said no one smiled and there were cigarette butts everywhere - signs of a stressed and unhappy student body, in her opinion. Also too big, too jock-y, too sporty.
Since you all brought us this far any final thoughts on Tulane vs Emory? At this time she wants to study Gender and Sexuality, (specifically interested in transgender youth and LGBT rights) but also has interest in Economics, Law, and anything where social justice is at the forefront.
As always, THANK YOU!!
Well, it’s going to be Emory. Bittersweet for her because she loved Tulane so much. She kept hoping for a sign and it came in an email from Emory. They announced a new course on Judith Butler’s book Gender Troubles which is one her favorite books. She even referenced the book in her essay!
D really connected to her Tulane regional admission person and it will be sad to give her the final news. Again, this is very bittersweet. Hopeful that her spot at Tulane might go to a waitlisted student.
Thank you for your help in this decision and throughout this entire process. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I could have done this without you all. All my best!!
congratulations!
@gettingaclue Congratulations to your daughter and thanks for all the updates. We are attending a local presentation by Emory this week.
My D is at Emory and absolutely loves it. She turned down $27K merit aud at Rhodes for pretty much the same reasons your D did. Congratulations and welcome!
Merit aid, that is…
Hi all. Little update: She got off the waitlist today at WUSTL. From what I’ve read here merit is not likely at this point and it doesn’t seem that they are known for generosity in that area from what I’ve seen on CC. I threw away all my paperwork when she accepted Emory so I can’t recall if we got much FA from the NPC, but I don’t think so.
They said they’s send her her financial aid offer on Monday and we’d have until Friday to decide. She’s happy with Emory, but we’ll see what the package looks like…
I’ll update later.
Wow–crossing my fingers for a big FA offer–did you inform WUSTL about what Emory offered, btw? Doing so might help give them the nudge they need…
(And she’s a Judith Butler fan? Awesome. Butler is a thorny read, but an extremely valuable thinker to be acquainted with, especially at your daughter’s age. Very impressive.)
@marvin100 I won’t pretend I understand all of what Judith Butler writes…she really floats D’s boat, though. lol
The whole waitlist notification was funny - sort of. She got a call on her cell saying she was off the waitlist but she refused the spot because she didn’t understand that she could say yes after paying her deposit at Emory, or that she could consider the offer. She was really taken off guard. (backstage of a play she was directing that was opening in 1 hr.) Then she called me and I said she could have asked for think time to consider the offer and to see what the financial package looks like. She freaked out, called back the # on her cell and the woman laughed a bit at her cluelessness (in a kind way) and said she’s send the info out and she could have until Friday to decide.
The takeaway for others: So even though only a handful of students come off some school’s waitlists, review what to say/do with your child in case they do get a call.
This may seem like an odd suggestion given that its reputation is stronger in the sciences and engineering, but take a look at Case Western. It gives out great merit aid, gets very bright students, and has a highly ranked theater program that offers a number of full-tuition scholarships based on auditions. It is in a big city with a great theater scene and has a combination of small LAC style classes in most (not all) departments, with the population and feel of a larger campus.
I don’t think she applied to Case, profparent
