Let me get this straight. You want this done for courses he didn’t complete LAST school year? And you are just thinking of this now?

How is he capable medically of completing these college courses, but cannot complete work from previous terms in school?

Yes, I want this done for courses he didn’t complete LAST school year. No, I have been working on this issue for a long time.

He has been getting better after 11th grade so he can complete these college courses.

Does he need these courses to graduate? I ask because if yes, then he would need to get incompletes versus failures. If no, then they might be expunged from the record.

The school did not provide proper accommodations and as long as you were advocating at the time, and the school was resisting, I would think you would have a case. I strongly recommend you see an education lawyer- one hour for $150-200- or call the Federal Dept. of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, who can investigate.

If you asked for a 504, or a medical leave, even if you did not use the right terminology, and the school did not provide, I would think you have a case.

Regardless, when your son applies to colleges, you can enclose a note with his transcript explaining and offer documentation (or include it). And make sure he registers with the disabilities office, also with medical documentation and a list of accommodations that would help your son should his medical problem recur or worsen.

Could you just start from the beginning and tell us the story? I think you’re forgetting that we don’t know the back story, and it’s kind of hard for us to figure out just what’s going on.

We would love to help, but we’re kind of confused.

Thank you. I will post the whole story later.

Thanks compmom. He doesn’t need these courses to graduate.
I don’t know how deep my son would be involved if I call the Federal Dept. of Education’s Office for Civil Rights? If they investigate, what’s the result?–They will force the school to take off those courses from his transcript? The VP will get penalty?

Can you just start from the beginning, please?

Investigate WHAT? How would we know? You’ve provided zero detail.

From the OP’s 4 other threads on this topic:

NG for No Grades would be fine on the transcript. Just explain to colleges that he was sick. I thought he had F’s. NG won’t affect GPA.

The Federal Dept. of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is a resource. You can call for info, not just for complaints. They ca give you suggestions. They can also talk to your school or even do a workshop is a school does not understand the ADA law. It can still be friendly with the school and doesn’t have to ruin letters of recommendation.

If your son is healthy now, that’s great. The NG’s are okay, unless they later convert to F’s. If they are NG’s as “incompletes” that need finishing, then he could finish them in a time frame acceptable to him.

If your son has the credits to graduate he can stay or leave. Would he leave due to health? What would he be doing with his time instead? If he is a senior (I forget now) he can certainly do something else with his time if his applications are all in.

My son is healthy now. He is currently taking courses at a community college and doing individual study at his high school.

Yes, NG won’t affect GPA. I’m just wondering why they can’t remove those courses from his transcript if NG means nothing?

I don’t think this issue is worth fighting over or worrying about, especially if your son is healthy now. You, he or the guidance counselor can simply include a note with the transcript sent to colleges, explaining that he did not finish those classes due to illness, but is healthy now. They will see how he does now, with better health, and use the record of classes finished for admissions, not the NG’s.

I really think it is fine.

There may very well be some administrative reason for the NG’s. Schools get funding per pupil and if they remove the NG they may have to give back the $5k or so that they got from the state for your son. Or something else you don’t know about.

Just let it go.

As for withdrawing from the high school, that is very possible. What is he doing for private study and why? Why does he want to leave? How are the community college classes going? (They can substitute for high school classes anyway, as you well know.) Is he doing dual enrollment?

The situation is very confusing and unclear and I guess I am trying to unravel it as the thread progresses.

If it’s a money talk, I can understand. But I need to make sure those NG would not make negative on his application.

My son has been doing individual study since Sep 2015. At that time, I asked the VP how about if the same thing happened again? Her answer was that he would get Fs again if he can’t complete the courses. So I insisted doing individual study.

He doen’t want to leave. He will graduate on June 2015. He is doing dual enrollment.
