deals on macs

hey,

I'm probably going to columbia, and i'm also probably going to get a macbook. I know that columbia gives some kind of deal with mac, but i can't see it until i have a columbia id. can someone who already has their id or goes to columbia tell me what sort of price reductions i'll be looking at?

the price break is the same for all schools. if you give me a link tho where it asks for id then i can tell you the exact numbers

What can you usually reckon with? 20% off?

black macbook (2.0ghz intel core2 duo, 1gig ram, 120gig hd) = 1582

mb pro (17inch, 2.33ghz intel core2 duo, 2gig ram, 160g hd) = 2838

too lazy to look up regular prices

edit: educational discounts ^

Here is the link (which requires id): https://www1.columbia.edu/pamacea/login.shtml?target=/sec/acis/sales/applepassthru.html&pamservice=krb&userfile=

yea those are the prices i posted above. there are more systems but im too lazy to post all, those are prolly the most popular anyways

shows up as $2599 w/ columbia discount

so i guess the columbia discount IS alot better than the regular educational discount!

Why are you getting a mac and not a PC?

disregard my previous post and use shraf's numbers, i must have been in the wrong place

if i got a pc i'd use linux
if i get a mac i can use linux or os x, and probably would use os x
also mac's are better

so i'll probably get a mac

i still stand by my belief that only lenovo makes descent laptops (gateways arent bad either) but as far as other pc laptops go, there isnt much selection to be had. and you can always dual boot windows on macbooks

Lenovo? Never heard of it.

I think it's a Chinese brand. Good/bad depending on how you look at it.

Thinkpad > *

Lenovo bought IBM's PC business about 2(?) years ago. Thinkpads are great laptops, I have a z60t that has only failed me once in the past 2 years. Tech guy came to my office the next day, replaced the bad component and I haven't had an issue since. I know nothing of their 3000 family of notebooks and probably would never get one.

If you're not getting a Mac, I'd rec a Thinkpad. HP's are good too. Toshibas used to have a good rep, I don't know how they're doing lately. Dells are not worth even looking at on a website.

If you're planning on taking the laptop out of your dorm and into the library, get something light. Lugging a 6 pound laptop around (when you see weight listings they usually dont include AC adaptor) is a PITA.

I think it's either Thinkpad or Toshiba for me then. Toshiba has these gaming laptops with 17 in monitors, those are pretty sweet...

Can someone check the price of the lowest level macbook on that site, please?

This is actually not true. a MacBook at Penn is an additional $100 off the Hi-Ed price and a MacBook Pro is an additional $200 off.

Some schools are more equal than others ;)

Until you try lugging it around all day...

Is there much point getting the black MacBook over the slightly less good white one right next to it, if I just want to use internet, work, listen to music, watch stuff?

Anyone?....
