To current Columbia students: Does anyone know how much of a discount we receive through columbia at dell.com? How about J&R music and computer world? I'm just wondering because dell is currently running a discount and it may be greater than the discount I would receive at either store through Columbia. Thanks.

i wish columbia offered IBM discounts. imo, dell is... blech.

...and please, don't start telling me about how great macs are. i know.

:)

hahaha wasn't going to...that's why I didn't mention the apple discount. Unfortunately, since I do not yet have a UNI, I cannot through that page find out the discounts. Does anyone already know them, so that perhaps maybe I should by a laptop now rather than later (higher prices but student discount)?

well, dell is always running some sort of a discount deal, and they mix it up with something a little different every few weeks. thus, i wouldn't really worry about how expensive their computers are now vs. how expensive they will be in the future with regards to that.

the much more significant difference in value with which you should concern yourself is the depreciation of constantly developing technology. most people advise students to wait until they get to college, or leat until a month or two before they leave, to buy computers they'll be taking with them. that way, what you get will be closer to the top of the line at any given price, and will last longer from the time you arrive at columbia.

i personally will probably be buying whatever i bring sometime in late july or early august.

wait until a few weeks before you are packing your bags to order your comp

technology changes everyday - you don't want to miss the next big thing b/c you were too anxious to get that fresh new college laptop

Well. the "next big thing" will still be expensive when it comes out. I will not be able to afford that. My primary concern is getting a good value. It's not that I'm so anxious...just that I'm looking for opportunities to save money.

I wish someone would answer magicroy's question.

WAIT!!! I was wrong. The Columbia deal adds onto whatever sales Dell already offers. So when you order, definitely use Columbia's Dell Member ID: US24184416.

i'm sorry magicroy, i didnt know that was the case
