dean's honor scholarship project/merit scholarships

Maybe they shouldnt send out scholarship stuff at mardi gras time… :)

I won a DHS.

My project was called “Truth Box”. I printed the DHS box on card stock and folded it into a little box and wrote “Do Not OPEN” on the top (like pandora’s box). Then I collected 50 truths from my acquaintances on little cards that said “The truth is…” and some people told me really personal things so it was really touching. Then I printed 50 truths about myself on the lining of the box. My commentary was about how my generation is grasping at anything that looks like truth (reality tv, formspring, Ron Paul) even if its not actually truth. And how we value “truth” over real virtues or morality.

Its hard to explain but it was a really cool little thing.

Congrats, lterry! Your project is very clever, and sounds like a lot (!!) of work. You should major in philosophy, lol. Anyway, a nice return on your investment in time and effort.

Thanks! My friends are so excited that they got to be a part of this for me.

So I decided to apply for this scholarship this year, and although I feel it is unlikely I will receive it, I thought I might as well try! I have a quick question though, I decided to do a video project involving both the box, and some personal stuff, so in the written commentary I was going to mention how the video ties into my life and my interest in film making, but I was wondering how long does Tulane expect this written commentary to be? I only planned on writing a paragraph or two since the video mostly says it all, but many have referred to this is another essay. Just curious, because I don’t want to write way too little or way too much.

There is no “too little” or “too much”. Really. If your video says 99% of what you need to get across and that only leaves a paragraph or two in order to tie it all up, then great. I could actually envision a project where the box was a frame for a photograph so outstanding nothing else need be said. It is about creativity, intellectualism, whatever your strength is that reflects what separates you from a very select group. So don’t overthink it, go with what you think is best.

Looking for a 2013 notification. Anyone receive one yet?

If they stick to the same timing as the last few years, the packages would go out at the end of this week. But that is just anecdotal, there is no promise on their part to do that. Since this is the first year of another full tuition award, the Paul Tulane, it is possible that the timing could change. I don’t see why it would, other than they have to coordinate so that the same person doesn’t win both, but then again we don’t know all the details that affect these kinds of things.

By Friday we should have some idea if they are sending them out or waiting longer this year.

I just called Tulane admissions, and they sent out notifications yesterday.

got the notification today–received the DHS. The project was a Tulane App that you can place on your phone, android tablet, etc. I suspect this is the first ever DHS project that was an app as I dont see any other apps posted on the android market that appear to be part of the DHS application. ps its a tulane themed game…

That’s fantastic, David. You should post this on the thread set up to track results. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1463297-place-your-thoughts-results-dhs-paul-tulane-scholarships-here.html</a> Just to keep them in one place.

Congratulations on receiving a DHS. You will have a great experience studying in New Orleans.
