I am a competitive applicant for the DHS at Tulane, but I'm swamped with other applications and essays and really don't have time to come up with a clever project for this scholarship. I know Tulane considers people for scholarships just when you apply (like without filling out additional forms), so will I still be considered for a full scholarship if I don't submit the DHS app? Will i have a lower chance of getting a full scholarship if I don't submit it?

You will have zero chance for a full tuition scholarship without getting the DHS (well, one caveat I will explain at the end). The maximum scholarship for all accepted applicants last year was $25,000 called the Presidential Scholarship. Very nice, of course, but not full tuition. BTW, just to be clear the DHS is full tuition, not a full ride. There are only 2 full ride scholarships that are for Louisiana residents only. So if you want a full tuition merit scholarship, you have to apply for the DHS.

The caveat is that if you are strong in community service, there is a smaller scholarship for that, the Community Service Scholarship, that is something like $10-15K. It can be added to the Presidential, so together they pretty much equal full tuition. Maybe that application would be something you have time for.

I got the DHS and I didn’t even start my project until the night before. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just spend a week or two thinking about what you want to do, and if you have to do your project at the last minute, then so be it.

You have a shot. Tulane says that 2250+ is what they look for in a DHS candidate, but that is not set in stone. My D (who has the DHS) was 2330 and had something like a 3.83 UW GPA. Lots of AP’s. Also with your stats and if the service is as strong as you way, you can apply for the CSS also. Many students apply for both, although you cannot get both. The Presidential and the CSS together is pretty much like a DHS.

I agree with the above-- you really don’t have to solve the world’s crises or peace in the middle east or cold fusion-- just come up with a clever, interesting idea that shows something about who you are. Don’t overthink it. And as FC suggested, apply for the community service scholarship as well. Good luck!

^^ but hard to know how many DHS applications were about Tulane and didn’t have good success. Speaking of experiences from a few years back, I believe FC’s dau’s project was related to Tulane (I’ll let him tell more if he chooses, as I believe he has before) but my s’s was not at all about Tulane. I think they want to see something creative-- regardless of the topic.

Yes, I think the originality and care taken are the most important, while having Tulane thrown in is a nice touch but not critical. In fact, I think if it seems “forced” it will backfire a bit, but really shouldn’t overthink it. What comes naturally will be best.

My D was taking AP chem at the time, so she wrote a “newspaper reporter’s account” of the discovery of Tulanium, and described its properties in terms that related to Tulane students and the mission of the university, things like that. The hysterical thing was that when she did a Google search it turned out that Tulanium had been used in the Superman comics way back in the 50’s, as an extra-terrestial element used in making the signal watch that Jimmy Olsen had to summon Superman for emergencies. It is my speculation that one of the writers must have had a connection to Tulane. She fit all that good stuff into her article, somehow. The “box”, for those of you wondering, was the square that Tulanium took up on the Periodic Chart. It was Element # 175 of course, because that year was the 175th anniversary of the founding of Tulane.

my D’s also had nothing to do with her… she just used a topic that was very close to her heart and did it in a creative manner that utilized some of her hobby interests

I have been admitted to Tulane into Honors program and have received Presidential Scholarship. Very grateful but still need financial help if I want to go to Tulane. I submitted my DHS project but not sure what my chances are:

ACT 34
GPA 4.25
EC: good with varsity sports
Community service: good

DHS project:think unique and speaks to who I am and what I want to do at Tulane

You find out around Feb 20 or so. Certainly your stats are where they need to be. The rest depends on the competition this year, the other parts of your application like recs, and just the opinion of the judges. On the surface you have as good a chance as anyone.

Thanks for quick response. I know my letter of recommendations are really good. Most unique scholarship I have applied for. Hope judges can see my passion and my desire to go to Tulane. I am from San Diego and very few people go to Tulane…hope this might help

Don’t know about San Diego, but Tulane actually has a pretty large group from California. The main thing is you have done everything you can. You sound pretty passionate about Tulane, and I am sure that came through. So now, even though I know it is hard to do, you should try and relax and focus on other things, and hopefully not think about this again until about February 19th, lol. Deep breathing helps.

I will be out of town at that time so I think it will be easier. I know there is no other way to do it but I wish there was a way to reissue the scholarships when they are turned down. I know it would be very expensive for the school but what a shame that students who want to go to Tulane wont go because of financial reasons and others who wont be attending Tulane get the DHS.
