Can someone please explain what this is?? Tulane's website doesn't really say and I've searched forums with no success. Can you basically do whatever you want?

And could you please give me a quick chance for the presidential scholarship and dean's merit, and the honors program? Thanks in advance

-ACT: should be 34+ by application (33 at the moment but I'm taking it in September with lots of studying)
-PSAT: 225, just got semifinalist notification
-4 years student gov't, class president sophomore-senior years
-Beta club president
-Varsity cross country 3 years
-About 200 hours volunteer service, mostly at a hospital but also at an orphanage in Ecuador and a local orphanage
-Just completed very selective summer program, only 20 kids in the state accepted
-1st place, mississippi mathematics and science tournament for two years in a row in biology

-I go to a small school with no APs/Honors offered, but I've taken 6 college classes, with an A in all

You don’t mention your UW GPA, but I will assume it is very good. In which case your chances for the presidential are also very good, and honors program should be a “given”. DHS is of course harder to say, but to answer your question the project is purposely vague because you can indeed do what you want. The idea is for them to see your creativity.

Ok thanks fallenchemist, and 4.0 sorry forgot to add that

So could I write an essay? (i know that doesn’t sound very creative)…
Or if that wouldn’t work could you give some examples of past projects that have worked? (if you know)

It isn’t clear to me if you found the “box” part of the DHS application. [Tulane Admission: Scholarships & Aid](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/) Click on the DHS hyperlink and you will get the pdf version of the application. A written portion is asked for, but apparently they expect more.

As far as past projects, if you search this forum for “DHS” and “Dean’s Honor Scholarship” you will find threads where I and others describe various projects that have been done. Good luck!

For comparison’s sake, I got the DHS with a 33 or 34 on the ACT, a 4.3-ish weighted GPA (a couple of Bs and a lot of dual-enrollment and some APs), and basically zero extra curricular activities. I did, however, go to a Governor’s School and do a mentorship through that.

My advice for the application is to write about something you care about. And maybe take a risk. When I did mine, I felt like I was possibly making a mistake, but it worked out. Vaguely said, I included some of my photography and used the box as a way to connect those and my essay.

If you actually want to know what I specifically did mine on, I can tell you, but I’m afraid it’ll hamper your creativity. (I know it woud totally destroy my ability to think of anything original.)

Dean’s Honor Scholarship - be authentic and be creative. This is a chance to show who you are. There is no right or wrong answer or way to approach this project.

fallen chemist-u seem to know a lot about these such scholarships and the university in general. Do you know when they are announcing the dean’s honor and john hainkel this year? i know they say late feb but that’s too vague-do you have a date of some kind?

There isn’t a specific date, but I believe that it has almost always been by the Friday of President’s Day week. So this year that would be no later than February 24. But that isn’t official, it is just historical. Given that Mardi Gras is Tuesday February 23, it is hard to say how that will affect the usual timing.

So try and take a few deep breaths and be patient. I remember how anxious we were as well, and I am just the parent! But there is nothing you can do to alter the timeline, so distract yourself with other things and within a few weeks, you should know one way or the other. Best of luck!

Just received the tweet that they are mailing the notifications to the winners of the DHS tomorrow. Although they did not say, I am nearly certain those packages they show are UPS overnight express. So everyone that won should hear no later than Friday.

After. The “sorry” letters just went regular mail, since obviously there are far more of them than the “congrats” ones. It would be far too costly to send the over 1,000 of them by express delivery.

I wouldn’t say you are being a pessimist, just recognizing the reality that only 75 win out of about 1,000 entries. It is good to keep ones expectations at an appropriate level.
