What is this orientation? Do they even take attendance?
Any consequences to not attending?

I remember them taking attendance two years ago. I didn’t go though. No consequences.

I went to the “Mandatory CNAS Orientation” yesterday and attendance was not taken. I don’t think there are any consequences for not going. Basically for the first one and a half hour, several professors informed us of the statistics of the correlation between the number of hours studied and GPA, the statistics of getting your future career, how to study, Bloom’s Taxonomy on developmental thinking, the consequences of academic cheating/student misconduct, forms (namely “petitions”) you must fill out if you decide to drop out of school (or something like that), what majors are available and what aren’t available within your college, what special programs are available pertaining to your major/college, and where to seek help/counseling (whether it’s mental, spiritual, academic, physical, etc.). For the rest of the time, a special academic advisor, depending on your major, talked to us more about our major, what deadlines you must meet for adding/dropping classes, when and where you must submit a “course plan” for the next quarter to your academic advisor (which is on the 5th week of the Fall Quarter on GROWL; you have until the end of the quarter to submit it, and it is sent electronically), when you must declare a major (if you’re undeclared; you must declare a major before reaching 90 units, which is around the end of your sophomore year), what breadth requirements you must satisfy, and probably a few tips on getting into a class you’re waitlisted for.

Of course, I can’t remember everything from the orientation, but these were ones that I paid attention to the most.
