I'm applying for the Dean's Honor Scholarship this fall, but there was something I just wanted to clarify. I know you can apply for both the DHS and the Community Service scholarship, but does applying for either of these affect your chances of earning other various merit awards?

Like, if I apply for DHS and don't get it, will they still consider me for the "various partial tuition scholarships ranging from $7,500 to $27,000 per year" listed on their website? I'm not sure I'm the strongest candidate for DHS (33 ACT, 1390 SAT, 4.0 UW GPA) but I think I might have a shot at one of the smaller merit awards, so I don't want to rule out my chances for one of those by applying for DHS.

No, applying for the DHS or the Community Service Scholarship definitely does not affect your chances of receiving any of the partial tuition awards. Based on your application for admission alone, you are automatically considered for all of the partial tuition scholarships (Leadership, Founder’s, Academic Acheivement, Distinguished Scholar, and Presidential) and you would be notified whether you received these when you get your acceptance letter, which is before the time even comes to submit your application for the DHS or Community Service Scholarship. If you later apply for and win one of the scholarships that require a special application, the scholarship would replace the partial-tuition scholarship in the case of the DHS, or be added to the partial-tuition scholarship in the case of the Community Service Scholarship.

Max099 is spot on. I would only add 1 crucial thing and 1 detail. The crucial thing is that in order to be eligible for the DHS you have to apply either EA or SCEA, assuming Tulane doesn’t make any changes this coming application round. The detail is that Tulane will combine scholarships only up to the amount of full tuition (not tuition plus fees, just tuition), so if you get the top merit award of $27,000 and a Community Service award of $15,000 and if that exceeds full tuition, they would “round it down” to full tuition. The exception is if you get the Hainkel award, but that is for Louisiana residents only.

I would go with your ACT score. A 33 is better than a 1390, at least according to the ACT people. They say a 33 is equivalent to about a 1460 SAT. With that ACT score, your 4.0 UW, and hopefully a number of AP courses along with good EC’s and public service, you have a fine chance at the DHS. Good luck!

Thanks so much fallenchemist! I do plan on applying SCEA. I’ve taken 6 APs so far and will be taking 5 this upcoming school year. I do have a pretty decent number of EC’s (heavily focused on community service) with leadership positions in many of them. I plan on taking the SAT again this October, but where it stands now, I have a 2080 on all 3 sections. Would you recommend just submitting my ACT, not my SAT at all? Do you think that SAT score would hamper my chance for any merit money? Or am I just being overly paranoid? Which is totally possible, haha.

But thank you again for the response! I’ve been creeping on the Tulane CC page, you seem to really know your stuff :)

With a 33 ACT, I see no reason to send the SAT. 33 is very high. If you still decide to retake the SAT and score 1450/2200 or thereabouts, you could always decide to send it before the DHS deadline. But 33, 4.0 GPA, 11 AP’s and strong EC’s you are in good shape.

In theory they only look at the more favorable test scores, but who knows. Might as well just send the best result you achieved, which is the ACT.

You seem very keen on Tulane, which if course I think is great. Always curious as to why, so maybe you don’t mind sharing that.

I don’t mind at all! I’m from Pennsylvania, but I really want to go far from home, preferably somewhere Southern. Tulane isn’t a popular choice in my area, but the College ******* gods are relentless. Since probably my freshman year of high school, Tulane has been in my list of recommended schools on CP, so I started checking it out. It’s just weird because everything on my college checklist matches up with the school perfectly: medium-sized at about 6000, in a city yet isolated, strong science programs, enthusiastic student body, etc. Unfortunately I’ve yet to tour, but I’ve looked at every single album on Tulane’s Facebook page and I’ve done the virtual tour about 10 times! I will definitely be visiting before I send in my app (hopefully I’ll get to go at the end of this month), because I really want to meet with my admissions counselor/do an interview and see what the students are really like.

I’m sorry, that was kind of a long story! Basically, I just stumbled upon Tulane and have liked everything I’ve heard/read/seen. The biggest downside is the cost, which is why I’m trying so hard for a scholarship.

Well, anyways, thanks again! I really appreciate your advice and I’ll definitely keep it in mind as I’m working on my apps!
