hi, i was accepted to michigan in december and deferred from my firstchoice school. mom wants me to go to michigan over all 10 colleges i just applied to because she heard that michigan has a great medical school. so before i make any decision, i wanted to know more about michigan. i know the basic stuff that's on their website, etc. i just want to know what it's really like from a student's perspective. what do you love/hate about your school?

I don't think its wise to choose a school for your undergraduate studies based on the quality of its medical school.

With that said, Michigan is a great school. Top notch academics combined with a good social life make for a very good four years. If you don't mind me asking, what other schools are you considering?

Duke(deferred), UPenn, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, WashU(St. Louis), Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Emory, Georgetown.

yup, i totally agree with you. my mom tends to judge schools by the quality of their med schools. (which i think is wrong.)

are you asian?

There's still plenty of good schools in your bunch. A couple which I would have chose over Michigan. Wait to see what they say.

The only advantage of having a world class medical school is the opportunity to participate in leading medical-related research as an undergrad ... that is, if you are interested in that.

Your entire list is excellent. Academically, you cannot go wrong. But the schools on your list don't have much in common. In terms of size and quality, Michigan is similar to Cornell, Northwestern and Penn. But Cornell is remote and NU and Penn are urban/suburban. Michigan is the heart of a vibrant, stand-alone college town.

My advice is to visit all the schools you are admitted into and chose the one than feels most like home to you.

Thank you :)

And why yes I'm asian.
