Debate at Stanford

Does anyone here know anything about policy debate at Stanford?

And could being successful in debate/forensics (competitive public speaking) at the high school level count as a "hook"? How would you make that evident to an adcom?

I do L/D debate myself.

Debate is not a "hook" unless you've been very successful at the national or state level.

Stanford has a debate society with a small but active policy debate section. You'd be welcome there.

Here's their website: http://www.stanford.edu/group/debate/

jegan3, do you happen to go to ONW? It'd be an odd coincidence to meet you here.

If you've seen Stanford's application (it's pretty much the same year after year), it has a 250-word short answer that asks what your most meaningful activity was. There are other places on the application to list your awards and accomplishments in debate (and if you're Jesi from ONW...you have quite a few =P), but that short essay is a great opportunity to make that EC into a hook.

I am indeed Jesi from ONW, lol. Would you happen to be Jimmy Chen?

Yeah, it's a small world, eh? At least over the internet. AIM me sometime.

About debate...I only have a vague recollection of this, but I think Sarah Bellows-Blakely formerly from T-High goes to Stanford and does policy debate.

What types of awards, may I ask? And where on the application can they be listed? I seem to recall that the EC space was very small.
