Hello, I'm wondering if creating a debate club would be a good EC for my highschool. I attend San Ysidro High and am going into Junior year. Have you started/attended a debate club? How is it organized?

I'm also afraid that many people wouldn't be interested in a debate team or club. Do you know any strategys to get them interested? Would you join a debate team?

I definitely think that creating a debate club would be a good extra curricular for your high school, however, I dont think that it should mainly be based on colleges seeing that on your record. I've been in a number of debates with our debate club at school and have experienced that it's more organized when a teacher is around, of course. An important aspect of that is knowing how to settle down two individuals who get way too into a debate. That's something that you should learn to do before you begin something like this. I would definitely join a debate team because it's something that would help me improve myself by educating myself on things that my debates would have to do with. I dont suggest you devise any strategies to get individuals interested... but i DO suggest you post up fliers. I'm pretty sure people would be interested. It's also great to advertise to many english classes because it's important to get many people involved. It's also great if you involve some english teachers as well... because they could easily give extra credit to those who attend your club.

ask around first and find out if there's an interest in the club & if so then go for it. i'm on the debate team at my school and it's great! if you plan on competing with other schools, you should make sure to find out what the rules are for participating in your region. good luck!
