I am thinking of joining, does anyone know what exactly you do on the team, and how to become an officer?

I was also thinking about joining the Debate Team, but I don't know much either. Sorry not to be of help.

Depends on the type of debate. At my school, captains are chosen by the coach and are essentially the best team.

My school's debate team has 6 people (three pair, I'm in it), and there are two co-captains. This is the second year we've had it. Basically you have to do lots of research on the resolved and share it, and compile it cohesively. I won't lie--it's a lot of work.

If you are talking about the Forensic Speech and Debate Team at your high school (if it's a part of the national forensics league), then there are usually two types of debate, public forum, and lincoln douglas. Public forum is a type of debate with partners debating a new issue every month. Lincoln Douglas is a more formal debate between with individuals debating a new issue every two months. Tournaments are held on Saturdays (they usually take up the whole day) and awards are given to the best in each category. There are also various speech categories. I agree with KaznackFCRC, it's a lot of research, speeches, etc. I believe captains are appointed by the instructors.
