I know this isn't financial aid, but I was hoping some of the financial experts on CC could help:

So I wanted to get a debit card for college so I set up a bank account with Bank of America (which has ATM's on Brown's campus) but today I got an email saying I wasn't approved which is really odd. We have never had any problems with not being approved by banks and credit card companies, in fact just recently my father took out a $15k private loan for my brother through another bank, so it didn't make sense why I wasn't approved (my father was a co-applicant). I checked my and my father's credit reports and there was nothing wrong with either report. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I was rejected because Bank of America will not give me a reason?

I had the same problem-- if you're young and set up an account online, they can't approve it because you haven't built up a credit history so they can background check you. You need to go into a Bank of America branch, show them some ID, and set up the account in person.

Unless your parents co-signed, this shouldn't have anything to do with them.

Chances are they'll give you a call in the next few days to sort things out.

BoA pulls Transunion or Experian depending on state. Yes they do a hard pull.

The reason you were denied is something only BoA can tell ya. But what I can say is that if you are over 18, you should not use your father as a cosigner. If you are under and not within 6 months of your 18th birthday then you do.

Call the Bank.
