DEC requirements

Can the DEC requirements be completed by taking Level 100 and Level 200 Dec courses? For a business management degree their sample course sequence shows two upper division DEC and 4 Upper divison electives for the junior and senior years. What happens if you have already completed your Decs with 100 and 200 courses. If I took two upper division Decs, I would have 128 credits while the degree requires 122 credits.
Do you have to take these two Upper division Decs and 4 Upper Division electives to get a business degree or is this an example to fill in to get the 122 credits needed to graduate. On their sample course sequence they are short two 2 dec in the freshman and sophemore year. Are the two upper division decs in the junior year to offset the two missing decs in the freshmen and sophmore years?

Those are only samples....you do not have to follow them, it's there as a guideline. First you need to separate DECs from your Major courses. The course numbers for BUS are made up, not the ones that really correspond with the school because I wasn't a BUS major so I don't know the exact numbers

DECs are core curriculums with a fancier name. As long as the Course Schedule Bulletin (you can find it in stonybrook.edu/registrar - Class Schedule) list a "course" as a DEC (it usually have a Letter accompanying the course title) you're fine. Like for DEC F - Social Behavioral Science course - PSY 103 will be one of your option because it has an "F" next to the course title or you can take Sociology 105 also another "F" course.

If you're not sure how many DECs you need to take, you can take a look at your Degree Progress Report on Solar. Or you can grab a paper version in the Library on the Second Floor right outside the Academic Advising Office. You can keep track of it by writing down the course(s) you're taking that is relevant for that Letter.

As for the major courses you need to take, it should be listed in the Bulletin under your Major...Like how many business 100, 200, 300, 400 level you need to take, or a specific course requirement.....(like say BUS majors must take BUS 100 to count as a major fulfillment......so you gotta take that. Otherwise if you take BUS 111 they'll count it as one of the elective)

After you fulfilled everything on both the DEC (some DECs require 1 course, some 2) and your Major courses (Like for example in order to graduate with a XX Major you need 13 courses.....the following are: 100 Level Course - one of two options (either 100 or 101) bla bla)......

Now in Addition
Out of the 120, you need of them 39 credits (13 courses) that are Upper Division which means 300 level to 400 level (doesn't matter what major or DEC or elective courses you take as long as the course is 300 level and higher)......I'm sure your Business classes will fulfill some of it. Upper division count both as part of the 120 to graduate & 39 credits Upperdivision required.

When you're going to be a Senior...Check to see if you have enough of 120 to graduate.......if not then take other courses, any courses, you can take Computer Science, any language classes, other business major courses that you like to take......as long as it fills up 120 so, you'll be ready to graduate.

Once you declare major, make sure you visit your Major Advisor to make sure you're on the right track, taking the courses required by the department (Some people doesn't go because they think they are following whatever is said in the Bulletin, but it never hurt to go, and you would definitely want to make a visit during Senior year to make sure you're all set to graduate.)

I hope it's not too confusing.....and answer some of your questions.

You can also check your DPR, which you can get on SOLAR, to get an idea of what you have and what you need. It'll break down every gen-ed requirement for you.
