Someone told me that I am eligible for Social Security grant money because my father died when I was 9 years old. He didn't have custody of me at the time, though, but I was just wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible for me to get some help paying for college because of my circumstances?

Contact the Social Security Administration. Your mother was probably getting Social Security Survivor's Benefits for you since you father's death. Be sure you have your father's Social Security number and yours when you call.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You will need to check with the SS administration as mentioned above. Typically, survivor's benefits for children end on the 18th birthday.

We have SS benefits for our daughter because her Dad is receiving his federal pension. They stop when she turns 18 or finishes high school if that is after she turns 18 (so we get an extra month). I don't know if this is different for survivors benefits. I have never heard of any SS grant for secondary education but then we were surprised we got benefits based on being on the pension.
