Hello, I am wondering what are some good/decent schools to attend if you aren't a straight "A" student or in the top 10% of your class with beyond amazing SAT/ACT scores.

I know I wont make it into a private top league university that requires a GPA or 3.7-4.0 with a 30+ ACT, but I am looking for a decent, more affordable college with a good International Relations or International Studies program in a big city setting.

Anyone got any suggestions? I need help. I am a CC student about to graduate next June and I have a 3.0 so far (hopefully it will raise by the end of this quarter) and haven't taken the ACT's yet. I'm going to sign up on the 10th for the December test though. I'm going to be a transfer student.

What do you mean by affordable, how much can you spend?

Unless you have a healthy budget, your in state publics will be the likely choices. There’s little aid for transfers except at schools requiring very high stats unfortunately.

Saraha, you’re new here, so I won’t scold you for it, but this is exactly the kind of question where the SEARCH function (see the blue bar above) is useful. There have been long, long threads on this topic on College Confidential. Here are links for two of them:

The second one asks about the “Jewish B student,” and there’s a lot of talk in there that’s specific to being Jewish in college, but there’s also a lot of information in there that would help any B student.

Bother! Too late to edit, and I discover I didn’t read carefully. I didn’t notice your 3.0 is in community college. (I’m glad I wasn’t sarcastic, at least. That would have been really embarrassing.)

I have two different suggestions:

Try asking your question to the area of College Confidential that’s for transfer students; you may get knowledgeable answers there.

Try asking the advisors where you go to school. They’ll have a lot of experience helping students make the move from community college to four-year colleges.

@ELM277, when I mean affordable I mean a school that isn’t as high as a Ivy League type school. I want to attend school out of state (I’m a WA state student and don’t want to attend the country town state schools here and don’t have good enough stats for U of Wash).

I was looking at CUNY but the only school that has undergraduate major for International studies was City College (the worst of the CUNY schools from what I read online). Maybe I could go there for my undergraduate and go to a more ‘prestigious’ school for my grad schooling like the City College, international studies alumni did. A lot of them got into Columbia’s international affairs program.

@Sikorsky, I did do a search (a ton of them) of other similar GPA’s but didn’t click on them because it seems they are mainly referring to HS student about to graduate rather than CC students about to Transfer.

I just read your other post, it’s okay, I will try to post in the transfer section. I also have a meeting with my advisor tomorrow about graduating this June and whats next for me in terms of schools.

You may be able to get instate rates (see list of 15 states in west that are included) through Western Interstate commission reciprocity agreement:

Just a thought if you are trying to leave WA.

I think you’ll have some good options though with the GPA, but it comes down to how much aid you will receive as a transfer (which is why I’m pasting link to other state school/less expensive options).

For private schools strong in IR, look at American and Occidental, but I have no idea how much FA they offer transfers, so just offering suggestions that are near a big city, have strong IR, and you have a chance of being admitted. The transfer threads are full of better advice.

Thanks, jkiwmom! I will look at the link. Thanks for the suggestions, I hear American is one of the best for the program, haven’t heard of Occidental. I’ll look it up for sure.

Thanks again!

For private Schools I was also looking at Bard in NY, I also looked at Boston University and it looks like it has a good international relations program. I’ll keep asking and looking. I just hope my ACT scores aren’t bad and my GPA raises by the time I transfer.

How about Willamette in Salem Oregon? Not cheap, but cheaper than a lot of California schools. I seem to remember them having good international relations, and they are looking for diversity, if that is relevant.

Thanks for dropping by in my thread, Shrinkrap. I haven’t looked them up. They are in the PNW area were I live so it’s not too far. My problem is that I would like to attend school in a large city setting and a lot of PNW schools that are good are in the smaller towns. I know UW is the best school in the NW and it’s in Seattle and that is only an hour away from me. I could apply there, but I’m going to wait for my gpa to get better than what it is now.

Thanks for the suggestions though! The area where the school is looks beautiful.
