Enough to pay rent and utilities and buy food, maybe some cable and internet. Why do I need more?

See, I had written a long and wonderful (well, not really wonderful) answering post. But I erased it, and since I just woke up and wrote it while my mind was still in its awesome delirious state, I probably won’t write it again.

So, here is the summary.

Here is a quote I just read the other day:
Any other specialist may save a life, but only a Psychiatrist can make it worth living."

The most dangerous diseases are those that make us believe we are well. And sometimes Psychiatrists have to treat patients who believe they are perfectly well, even though they display a highly disturbing amount of symptoms that prove the opposite. How hard do you think that would be?

A Psychiatrist doesn’t just do psychotherapy. By the way, psychotherapy is much more complicated than just sitting there and listening to someone talk. And actually, Psychiatrist are starting to practice less and less psychotherapy.

Psychiatry is a job in demand, the demand has been rising for over a decade and is still rising. If the demand is rising it’s because of a reason, don’t you think? Psychiatry is something very important, useful and helpful and much more difficult than people think. It is actually the job with the highest suicide rate. It takes a lot for someone, and of someone, to be a Psychiatrist, it’s not easy. Neither to become a licensed one, nor to practice. And all of the stigma doesn’t make it any easier. Just fyi, it takes 12 years counting the residency.

Saying that a psychiatrist gets payed to listen to someone talk is absurd, I don’t mean to offend anyone either. It’s like saying that the only thing a doctor, let’s say a neurologist, does is prescribe Advil. Or that cardiology is based on telling patients to go home and stuff themselves with ice cream while watching Romeo and Juliet.

Sorry if anything of what I said is ludicrous, I’ll come check it out later.

But, since I didn’t really answer what my idea of a decent pay would be, my answer was kind of vague, here it is:

Someone said they were raised with a silver spoon. I grew up counting pennies so I would be more than happy with just around 40k, I could survive with a lot less, but that would make me a little more than stable. It also depends greatly on the country I’ll live in, and the city.

the diversity here is amazing… some ppl will get by with 30k, others aspire to 500k, and one has his whole life set without having to do a thing :)

@psychomni

my bad, I think I mixed up psychiatrists and pyschologists.

I still think we live in a time though with so many antidepressant medicines and what not that its kida getting a little overdone. I mean, I was watching TV and when then an antidipressant ad got to the point when it goes through all the medical warnings (besides the fact the side effects sound incredibly random and dnagerous) and it said something about how kids and teenagers should use the drugs. And I thought really? Kids and teenagers? They need antidepressants? It just seems like if there is any little thing wrong with you, whether it is something wrong with you or it is just in your head, there is a pill for it.

@theydidntnameme- Yeah. Its like i said it all depends on 1)What you’re used to and 2)They type of life you want to leave. My family isn’t poor. Were pretty well off all things considered, but I just want something a little better for myself. There are a few things that my parents can’t get me (Car) that i’d like to be able to get my own kids. I’d like to have a house in a pretty rich area in Tampa lol.

Yeah, I was watching the Masters yesterday and was on the edge of my seat because I was worried Angel Cabrera would take his five iron to KJ Choi’s face.

yeah… that’s exactly what I meant

I’m a chemistry major. I’m still in undergrad and living very comfortably on $15,000 of scholarships a year plus whatever I make from my part time $9/hr tutoring job. I don’t see any reason I couldn’t get by on 30K when I won’t have to worry about paying tuition and fees, though I’d be happier with closer to 50-60K so that I’d be in a better position to save money and hopefully have a house and kids someday. I’m fortunate in that, since my scholarships pretty much covered all of my tuition and living expenses that my parents would have been willing to pay for, they bought me a (lightly) used car and are willing to pay for my gas and car insurance until I graduate. Since I’ll have no debt from college and hopefully won’t need another car for 10 years or so, getting by on 30K at first shouldn’t be a problem.

I am planning on going to graduate school and I’m not sure how much I can actually expect to make if I do make it through that, but if it exceeds my expectations then I will be rather pleased.

When I say a job has decent pay, I think in the 50-80k range, for mid-career salary. But I wouldn’t be satisfied with it.

I honestly have no clue what kind of a salary I would need to be satisfied. I’ve come to the realization that It’s unlikely that I’ll ever have the lifestyle I grew up with, unless I win the lottery or something, haha. But I’m assuming it’s more than 30k as some of you stated, since I just paid 12k for my christmas trip to mexico, for me and my gf.

Major: Petroleum engineering.

Doing some exploratory drilling? ;)

^2 things

1.) You’ll be able to live like you grew up as soon as your grandparents/parents die and leave you something in their will

2.) Let’s hope you’ll have a mid-career as a Petroleum engineer.

^^MLD has a point. Unless your parents are just insanely weathly then you might have some problems. But even with that, if a family is weathly it usually transfers over to the next generation.

Of course people can survive on 30K they just can’t live a flashy lifestyle. Again, it all depends on what you want in life. A decent lifestyle a fine thing, but a rich lifestyle is just so much more appealing.

I want to live modestly, and having no college debt will be very helpful.
And if I ever need extra cash I hope I can find a rich old person to befriend.

Major: Accounting

I’d like to start at or around 50-55K. If I can get my CPA that shouldn’t be impossible at all. I’ll have no college debt and I’d like to buy my car off my parents and drive it until it dies. I’d like to start at an accounting firm then maybe move into industry, like oil&gas. Mid-career? I have no idea. But like I’ve said, this is what I’d LIKE to do. Who knows?

I’m hoping for a starting salary of around 50K, but I honestly think I could get by on less. I’m not really a high maintenance person, and my family is definetly not rich so I’ve never been used to a really really luxurious lifestyle.

major: accounting

If I stay in South Carolina, I’d be pretty happy on $30k a year. It’s more than my parents make. SC has a low cost of living. (My parents mortgage is like $700 a month for a 2300 sqft house)

I could still go on vacations and whenever I get married, if my husband also has a job… $50-60k sounds extremely reasonable to me.

yeah, I think I am just gonna marry a rich man…

… oh wait

****ing lol

I don’t care too much how much I make… I was raised with a silver spoon too but didn’t care too much for the reflection so hopefully I’ll make just enough so that my parents, society, and future woman won’t hate me

^^ Lmao!!

CC should seriously create ‘like’ buttons!

I don’t think you want to go into the oil industry… xD
