Many people talk about the amount of money they plan to make in life, depending on there job and how much they plan to make as soon as they get out of college. I've seen and heard a lot of people talk about the job they plan to have and how they'll earn "decent pay". My question is, what do you guys consider to be decent pay?

Please feel free to post your major as well and how you believe it will lead you to the life you want/your idea of "decent pay".

On a personal note, I myself have no idea. I'd have to do some research into the price of living and the cost of a house, etc.

Major: Psychology
Job: Psychiatrist (planning on going to med school)
I will probably make around 200K a year, which is great since I would be happy with less :)

Costs of living are irregular and subjective, so you should check many different resources and places and then do an average of the averages.

Major: English Literature and ? (Not sure of the second major yet; Probably gonna be Psych though)
Job: Lawyer, Professor, ? (Depends on what I choose for the second major)
Just from doing a brief scan of what elun91 posted a link to as a lawyer i’ll probably make around 90K. I’ve gotta do some more research, but that’ll probably put me in the upper middle class. For me thats MORE than decent pay lol.

I think the pay ranges from 40k to 60k. Senior positions are I would assume to be around 85k. Then there are less positions, which I’m not sure if Ill ever be or not, which would be in the 6 figures.

MLD-I agree with you. There are a few jobs where people make an insane amount of money for what they do.

Yakyu- thats why I was asking everyone of what they consider to be decent. Different people plan to live in different ways. Some mght have larger families, some might want to live in a certain area, etc.

How do you guys feel about inflation? Assuming 1% annual inflation for the next 20 years, the salary you’re listing will be worth about 80% of what it’s worth now. If there’s 2% inflation, the value will be closer to two-thirds.

Well, I was about to say I tihnk it is ridiculous some one would pay that much money to talk at a guy about their problems and stuff along that line, but I think I am confusing a psychiatrist and a pyschologist.

People in sports and entertainment make that much money because they bring in that much money. Sports also add that element that it is a dangerous job. If you think they get paid too much (which they probably do) America will have to stop going to their shows/games.

Anyway, they deserve it more than a guy on a coach that listen to your problems.

I’m curious, but do you think the same about the top-tier eSport gamers? The champion of the first GSL tournament for Starcraft II won 85k (just for one tournament!), while the kid who just took home second place this past weekend for the World Championships has earned 60k+ in just a few months. (15kish at the WC, with at least three other second-place 15k cash prizes for previous tournaments.) The guy who got first place has earned at the very least 50k already (again, over the course of a few months).

Kind of makes me want to go into pro-gaming, to be honest! :D

If I was that good at video games, that would be awesome. But that is no career. And like I said, if people wanna pay money for something, whether it is sponsoring some kid at starcraft or paying someone to listen to your problems, that is their business. It doesn’t really matter what I think

coming from a family who own businesses throughout California, i would hope for at least 7 figures.

Major? Political Science
How it will help me? It won’t. I only wanted to attend college for the “experience,” and once i finish school, I plan on going straight into the family business.
