Deciding between New College of Florida (NCF) or Florida State University (FSU)

I plan on majoring in Classics and/or History, and after undergrad I plan to go to grad school for a masters and later on hopefully a PH.D. However, I’m entirely undecided about which school to go to.

For New College: I like that I’d be able to do independent study projects and write a thesis. I also like the small class sizes. However, I’m concerned about the small and mostly homogenous student body.

For FSU: I like that it has name recognition and if I apply to the honors college and get accepted I’ll also write a thesis. It’s also a big university so it has a lot of resources. I’d be going in with a few good friends, but I’m afraid it’s so big I wouldn’t be able to find a sense of community. Also the class sizes are worrying (even though with my AP credits I’ll have freshmen classes completed by the time I enter college.) I also find the Greek life sort of unappealing.

Any advice is appreciated immensely I’m totally lost!!

Have you visited both schools. I went to new college and although the campus is very nice, there is definitely a different vibe to that school that I would make sure you’re okay with.

@pitt2021 yeah I’ve visiting both schools! I did the admitted students day at New College, and my brother went to FSU so I visited a couple times and went to a class with him (though I never toured). I think both campuses are nice, however I don’t think FSU or New College are really my vibes which is why I’m so stuck. I feel like I’m someone who works well in most environments so I’ll be fine though

I personally would choose fsu as I believe you would get the whole college experience. I also know fsu is really good for the humanities and history. However, I know new college is very good for people who want to go to grad school so the thesis is helpful. I’m not sure about this at all, but I think with some big schools you can do honors within the major(if you don’t get into fsu honors college) and you’ll probably write a thesis for that. Once again, I’m not sure. How did you like the admitted students day? Do you think you would fit in? Which campus do you prefer? Close to home?
