Hello everyone,
I am a highschooler currently torn about which university to attend this coming fall. Right now, it’s between UWaterloo for Math Co-op and the University of Toronto for Electrical Engineering. I am equally interested in both programs, and am hoping to get some opinions on the education quality and job prospects for both of these programs, not which one is better per se but which one will provide a wider breadth of opportunities and experience. Tuition is not a main concern, and neither is social life (although a better one is preferable). If any past or present students from either of these schools could give me their opinions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Those are 2 very good options, but they are very different programs. Do you know what your career goals are? Engineering is more applied (like physics) while math is more theoretical. The education quality will be top notch for both programs.
I would give the edge to job prospects to an engineer. U of T engineering has the PEY program which provides work opportunities.
The lifestyle at Waterloo with co-op is very different than that at U of T. At Waterloo, students do a co-op term after every school term, so the friends you make during one term will be gone from campus the next. I have one child at Waterloo who has just as many friends as her sibling at U of T had though.
I am still uncertain about my intended career choice. If I were to go to Toronto for engineering, I will probably go into engineering afterward. If I go to Waterloo, I will probably major in data science or actuarial science, or even mathematical finance. I have not decided for sure yet, but I may try and transfer into computer science at Waterloo if I do not get accepted into the program (my decision has yet to come out).
@pandemicssuck Do not count on being able to transfer into CS. It’s the most competitive program at Waterloo. See this page https://uwaterloo.ca/math/internal-transfer Data science, actuarial science and mathematical finance would be good choices but data science has a very competitive admissions process as well. Don’t count on being able to declare it. https://uwaterloo.ca/data-science/undergraduate-program
Yeah, I’ve heard about the difficulty of getting into these programs. They will be my goals but actuarial science and mathematical finance will still be there in case I fall short. If I do get into data science, how do you think that compares to Toronto engineering?
They’re equally good programs. You have to decide which one aligns with what you want to do for a career. Both universities have very active subreddits -uwaterloo and uoft. I’d go there to get current student feedback.
Edit: LOL. Looks like you already found them. Good luck with your decision!
