Deciding on which college to attend...appreciate any opinions!

Hi there!

Right out of the gate I'd just like anyone to know this is my first post here at CC, so please forgive me for not using any forum slang or abbreviations or anything!

I am a senior at Niles McKinley High School in (you guessed it) Niles, Ohio. I currently am participating in SB140 at Youngstown State University, and am approaching the dreaded deadlines for a number of university-specific scholarships, so I would like to try and come to a dead decision as to which school I want to attend.

Here are some stats about my colleges, status, cost/aid, external scholarships, EC's, etc.:

Accepted Colleges/Universities (no particular order):
- University of Miami
- Case Western Reserve
- Kent State University
- Baldwin-Wallace
- Illinois Institute of Technology
- Wittenberg
- Xavier University
- University of Akron
(and 10 or so more small safety colleges in Ohio that I'm not super interested in at all)

Stats:
- GPA: 3.976 (unweighted 4.0 scale)
- Class Rank: 2nd
- Composite ACT: 33
- Class Track: Honors/AP English & Math, school doesn't offer anything else (lame).

Major EC's:
- Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, SPL, JASM)
- Key Club
- Founded school's Computer Club & FIRST Robotics Team
- Prep Bowl / Academic Challenge
- English Festival
- Rec-league soccer
- Rifle Team
- Lot of varied work experience, research experience, networking systems, programming, etc.

Scholarships:
- Most universities gave me decent 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 tuition (the in-state colleges all gave me close to full-tuition scholarships).
- I won my school's most prestigious $10,000/year for 4-year Clayman Scholarship.
- Waiting on a number of scholarships, up to maybe an additional $10k - $20k per year granted I won 75% of them.

Interest:
- M.B.A. major, double major in computer science / engineering.
- I'm very entrepreneurial spirited, have started several companies, done a lot of work in various fields, interested in starting a number of more brick-and-mortar businesses, tech ventures, internet ventures, etc. throughout college.
- Some education in law, eventually a J.D. and BAR acceptance.
- Kind of torn between engineering and computer science since I have a strong interest in both, so it's mainly a matter of which first
- I am 150% sure I would like to leave Ohio and to go a more "alive" place for college such as Florida, Chicago, New York, California, etc. that would offer me more opportunities.

Me:
Single child, live with mom (single-parent). Currently unemployed pay-wise, but just started a new part-time job. FAFSA EFC was $5901. Mom makes $50,000 AGI, not interested in paying for my college at all.

So basically, I would just like some opinions on what the best college decision may be. I was leaning towards Kent until I got acceptance packets from Miami and Case the other day, and would like to move, start new, and be somewhere I could do a lot more than the overly dead area of Ohio I live in.

Thank You!
-Tyler

That’s a good school list. Wait until you get all your aid offers and put them all in a spreadsheet to figure out the least expensive/what you can afford. You’re aiming for the NET COST. If your mom isn’t going to help then you’ll probably have to take out a Stafford Loan which is limited to $5.5K as a freshman. Room and Board is usually in the $10K range so you’ll need to work over the summer to make ends meet.

MODS: Please edit out school and name info.

Get a book on college admissions from your local library. A good admissions book will talk about finding a good fit, and also about understanding college financing. The right choices are ones you can afford that provide what you want. And I deliberately used the plural “choices” because there are going to be several colleges that are as right for you as anyone can tell without the ability to see into the future. People agonize over finding the “best” when reality is that several of their options are essentially indistinguishable. Best of luck!

Thanks to both of you.
